• Born on 31 August, 1925 in Visakhapatnam, Arudra hailed from a distinguished family whose history stretches back four centuries. His first poetic awakening came during the Japanese bombing of Visakhapatnam in World War II, which inspired Loha Vihangalu (Metal Birds). This powerful anti-war poem marked his literary debut.
• Arudra’s formative years were eclectic. He served in the Royal Indian Air Force, worked as a photographer, and eventually immersed himself in journalism and the Telugu film industry. Originally spanning thirteen volumes, later condensed into four, it traces the evolution of Telugu literature from its origins to the modern era, making it a foundational reference for scholars and enthusiasts alike. • As a poet and lyricist, Arudra brought literary finesse to popular culture. He penned over 3,000 film songs, many of which became cultural staples, effortlessly blending poetic sophistication with mass appeal. His film lyrics, from devotional hymns to romantic duets, demonstrated his versatility and deep understanding of both classical and contemporary idioms. His landmark works include Tvamevaham, a searing poetic refection on war and human suffering, and countless film songs that continue to resonate across generations.
• Arudra was also a passionate researcher and revivalist of traditional arts. His scholarship on Vilasini Natyam, a classical dance form, played a pivotal role in its preservation and revival. • Vaikunth Dattaram Kunkolienkar was born in 1925 at Margao. K. Vaikunth began his career as an assistant to cinematographer Surendra Pai on D.D. Kashyap’s Bari Behen (1949). In an era when senior cameramen rarely shared technical knowledge, he learned the craft through perseverance and dedication.
• Rising steadily through the ranks, Vaikunth received his first major break within seven years with Garam Coat (1955). The film was his first independent feature as cinematographer and established him as a technically skilled and innovative cameraman. His reputation continued to grow, and 1971 marked one of his biggest successes with Mere Apne, the year’s major hit. Directors admired K. Vaikunth for his deep technical knowledge, disciplined work ethic and mastery of lighting. His documentary experience strengthened his natural, fluid approach to cinematography, and leading actresses such as Suchitra Sen, Jaya Bhaduri and Hema Malini credited him with enhancing their on-screen appearance.
• Beyond feature films, Vaikunth made significant contributions to documentaries and advertising films. He collaborated regularly with noted documentary filmmakers. His early documentaries The Story of Kashmir and The Great Betrayal on the Indo–China war, earned him President’s Medals. In 1956, his documentary And Miles to Go won the Bengal Tiger Award. He further expanded his creative pursuits by directing and producing films under his own banner, K Vaikunth Films. His work included several documentaries on Goa such as Goa After Liberation, Goa Marches On, and the acclaimed Aamche Bhau, based on the life of Goa’s first Chief Minister, Dayanand Bandodkar.
• Known for his humility, simplicity and tireless energy, K. Vaikunth remained grounded despite achieving remarkable success, including five silver jubilee hits between 1971 and 1973. Always seen in his trademark kurta-pyjama, he was admired not only as a master cinematographer but also as a warm, engaging personality who valued conversations and human connections. K. Vaikunth passed away in 2003 at 78 years of age.

• For most Mongolians, India is a “spiritual neighbour,” a declared ‘third neighbour, a ‘strategic partner’, and a centre for pilgrimage. Lately, the 4 Ds Dharma, Democracy, Development Partnership, and Digital Development Cooperation have become pillars of the Mongolian relationship. Historically, India and Mongolia have interacted through the shared heritage of Buddhism.
• It is believed that some tribes from the Kangra kingdom migrated to Mongolian territory 4300 years ago with Mangaldev, son of the Kangra king, and the majority of them returned to India after staying there for about 2000 years, though there is no historical evidence yet to prove this. In 1924, Mongolian PM A. Amar proposed in his book that Mongolian ancestors could have come from the Himalayas.
• The ‘Ganga Nuur’ lake is believed to have derived its name from the Ganga River in India. As per the popular legends some Mongolian Lamas brought water from Ganga and poured it into the lake in Sukhbaatar Province and named it so. As for Buddhism, it appears to have traversed to Mongolian steppes through Tibet and the Himalayan region. During the Hunnu State and Great Mongol Empire periods, Buddhist monks and Indian traders visited Mongolia. In 552 BC, a Lama Narendrayash from the State of Udayana (Northern India) with some others visited Nirun state. Since India is regarded as the land of Buddha, Lamas and students from Mongolia used to travel to Nalanda, once the largest residential University in India, to study Buddhism.
• These accounts confirm that both India and Mongolia were in close direct contact especially during 5-7 centuries AD and it seems that Buddhism in Mongolia accelerated the process of further spread of Indian culture in Mongolia. The intellectual development of Mongolia is ostensibly influenced by the Mahayana school of Buddhism, its philosophy and the philosophical treaties of Nagarjuna used in simplified expression and terminology.
• Mongolian Buddhism is predominantly the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhism practiced in Tibet and China, but over the centuries, it has evolved into its own version, having incorporated the pre-Buddhist religion of ‘Tengarism’ as well as ‘Shamanistic’ influences.
• Over the last few decades, India–Mongolia relations have been on upward trajectory with several high-level visits further consolidating the relations. Late Ambassador 19^th Bakula Rimpoche, during his 10 years’ tenure in Mongolia from 1990-2000, contributed immensely to consolidating this legacy of Buddhist connection with India and was instrumental in reviving hundreds of Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia and setting up of revered Pethub Monastery in Ulaanbaatar city. The relations have deepened, intensified and consolidated our shared heritage of Buddhism with Mongolia.
• The diplomatic relations with Mongolia were established on 24^th December 1955 and in January 1956, the first Mongolian Ambassador was posted to New Delhi. However, the Resident Mission of India in Ulaanbaatar was opened on 22 February 1971 and before that Indian Ambassador in Moscow (T.N. Kaul) was concurrently accredited. In 2020, the Embassy of India marked the 65^th anniversary of India–Mongolia diplomatic relations during which a special commemorative stamp by Mongol Post on the 65^th anniversary was released in Dec 2020 by Hon. External Affairs Minister of India.

• Tansen, born in Behat village near Gwalior, revolutionized Indian classical music. His compositions and mastery over ragas earned him the title of Music Emperor at the Mughal court under Emperor Akbar. His legacy, immortalized in the “Veer Bhanuday Kavya,” is encapsulated in the lines: “There has been no musician like Tansen, nor will there be one in the future.” His influence still resonates in the music of today, inspiring generations of musicians.
• The Tansen Music Festival is not merely a celebration of Tansen’s music but serves as a grand confluence of classical music, drawing thousands of music lovers. The Tansen Music Festival’s roots trace back to Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia, who initiated the Urs Tansen to honor Tansen’s legacy. This festival, celebrated by both Hindu and Muslim communities, reflects the spirit of unity, Tansen’s music embodied. From its inception, it has been a symbol of harmony through music, lasting three days.
• Gwalior’s music schools have been central to the festival’s success.
