About :

  • The National School of Drama (NSD) is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. Established in 1959 as a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, NSD became an independent entity in 1975. It was registered as an autonomous organisation under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and is fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Over the past 50 years, NSD has played a crucial role in shaping contemporary theatre by providing rigorous training and fostering artistic excellence among aspiring theatre practitioners.
  • NSD offers a highly intensive, thorough, and well-structured three-year training programme that integrates theory with practice. The curriculum is meticulously designed to cover every aspect of theatre, drawing inspiration from the methods of renowned theatre personalities. The training includes systematic studies of Sanskrit drama, modern Indian drama, traditional Indian theatre forms, Asian drama, and Western dramatic protocols, ensuring that students gain a holistic perspective on theatre arts. As part of their training, students produce and perform plays, enhancing their practical learning experience and engaging with audiences.
  • NSD has two major performing wings: the Repertory Company and the Theatre-in-Education (TIE) Company, each contributing uniquely to theatres in India and beyond.
  • The NSD Repertory Company was established in 1964 to provide a professional platform for graduates of the school. Initially starting with four artists—Shri Ramamurthy, Ms Meena Williams, Ms Sudha Shivpuri, and Shri Om Shivpuri — the company has since evolved into a major institution within NSD. It regularly stages contemporary, modern, and experimental plays, offering theatre lovers a rich and diverse experience. The company also organises its own annual festival, presenting past and new productions each summer.
  • Founded on 16 October 1989, the Theatre-in-Education Company, also known as ‘Sanskar Rang Toli’, is one of the most significant theatre education resource centres in India. This wing is composed of actor-teachers who perform and engage with children in schools. The plays created under Theatre-in-Education (TIE) are designed to be interactive, curriculum-based, and age-appropriate, fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. Since its inception, the TIE Company has performed over 800 shows of 26 plays across India, reaching more than 5.5 lakh children, as well as educators, parents, and theatre enthusiasts.
  • NSD is also actively involved in theatre outreach and education through its Extension Programme and Traditional Theatre Project.
  • Launched in 1978, the Extension Programme aims to decentralise theatre training by conducting workshops in different parts of India and neighbouring countries like Nepal, and Bhutan. These workshops not only introduce participants to theatre but also contribute to their personality development and emotional growth.
  • The Traditional Theatre Project, initiated in 1980, bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary theatre. It facilitates creative collaborations between traditional artists and modern theatre practitioners, ensuring that India’s rich theatrical heritage continues to inspire new generations of performers.
  • NSD also plays a vital role in theatre literature through its Publication Unit, which publishes textbooks, translates significant theatre works from English to Hindi, and brings out research-based publications on theatre. One of its major publications, Rang Yatra, documents the history of the NSD Repertory Company from 1964 onwards. By 2010, the unit had published 82 books on drama and related subjects, further enriching India’s theatre discourse.
  • Having completed 50 years as an autonomous organisation, NSD continues to shape the future of theatre in India. As part of its commitment to theatre excellence, NSD organises Bharat Rang Mahotsav, India’s largest theatre festival. Launched in 1999, this prestigious festival has reached its 25th edition, marking a milestone in Indian theatre.
  • The National School of Drama stands as a beacon of excellence in theatre education, training, and performance. As it celebrates 50 years of excellence, NSD continues to uphold its legacy while adapting to the evolving world of theatre. The institution remains dedicated to enriching the arts, inspiring creativity, and fostering new talent for years to come.

About :

  • The Maha Kumbh, a sacred congregation that unfolds every twelve years, is more than a spectacular gathering of millions – it is a spiritual odyssey that delves into the very essence of human existence.
  • At the heart of the Maha Kumbh Mela lies a symbol steeped in cosmic significance – the “Kumbh” or sacred pot. This vessel, laden with symbolism, transcends its physical form to embody the human body and the quest for spiritual awakening. According to Hindu mythology, the Kumbh symbolizes the celestial pot that emerged during the churning of the cosmic ocean, containing the divine nectar known as “amrit”. Metaphorically, the Maha Kumbh represents the human form, and the nectar within symbolizes the spiritual essence intrinsic to every individual. The stamps are inspired from the famous verse :

  • STAMP 1: Maharshi Bharadwaj Ashram
    • Associated with Maharshi Bharadwaj Ashram, this place has been a revered religious site for centuries. During Maharshi Bharadwaj’s time, it was renowned as an educational centre. According to Ramayana and Purans, Shri Ram visited this place with Mata Sita and Lakshman while on his way to Chitrakoot during his Vanvas period. The famous Ramcharitmanas written by Tulasidas also begins from the Bharadwaj’s Ashram in the Balkand.
    • Maharshi Bharadwaj was the author of numerous texts on subjects such as Grammar (Vyakaran), Ayurveda, Dhanurveda (Archery), Political Science (Rajneeti Shastra), Mechanics (Yantrasarvasva), Economics (Arthshastra), Purans, and Education, among others. However, today, only Yantrasarvasva and Shiksha (Education) are available. According to the Vayupuran, he wrote a book called Ayurveda Samhita, which was divided into eight parts and taught to his disciples. According to the Charak Samhita, he imparted the knowledge of Kayachikitsa (general medicine) to Atreya Punarvasu.
    • Maharshi Bharadwaj received knowledge of Ayurveda and Savitr Agni Vidya (knowledge of the fire of Savitr) from Indra, and later, in a different era, from Lord Brahma. By absorbing the power of fire, the Maharshi attained the essence of immortality and ascended to the heavenly realms, where he gained union with Aditya (the Sun). (Taittiriya Brahman 3/10/11)
    • Perhaps for this reason, Maharshi Bharadwaj was one of the longest-living sages. Maharshi Charak described him as one with an immeasurable lifespan. (Sutra Sthan 1/26).
    • Today, the site is home to several temples, including the Bharadwajeshwar Mahadev, Maharshi Bharadwaj, Tirthraj Prayag and Devi Kali among others. Nearby, the beautiful Bharadwaj Park offers a serene atmosphere for visitors to relax and unwind.
  • STAMP 2: Snan
    • Prayagraj, the Tirthraj or ‘King of Pilgrimages’, is sanctified by the Triveni Sangam – the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati. According to ancient scriptures, bathing when Guru (Jupiter) enters Vrish Rashi purifies the soul and attains Moksha (Salvation) – known for hosting the Kumbh, and the Magh Mela annually. Prayagraj Kumbh is a mega event that features various rituals, with the Snan bathing ritual known as Tirth Snan being the most significant. The Ganga is considered the river of knowledge, the Yamuna is regarded as the symbol of devotion, Saraswati is the bestower of liberation (moksha), and Lakshmi grants wealth. Therefore, one who bathes at the Triveni Sangam of the three rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the invisible Saraswati – attains knowledge, devotion, wealth and liberation (Moksha).
    • Millions of pilgrims take part in the Kumbh Tirth Snan at the Triveni Sangam, performing this sacred ritual per the belief that by submerging oneself in the Sangam Jal, one is purified of all sins, releases oneself and their ancestors from the cycle of rebirth called Moksha, and they also ultimately attain their Moksha. Along with the Tirth Snan, pilgrims also camp on the banks of the holy river called Kalpvas and participate in discourses from various Sadhus, Tapasvis, and spiritual Mentors seeking spiritual enlightenment and guidance. The Kumbh Mela is a unique opportunity for devotees to connect with Sanatan discourses of harmony, and their spiritual heritage and seek Moksha.
  • STAMP 3: Akshayvat
    • The Akshayvat, also known as the immortal Banyan tree, is a sacred tree deeply rooted in Sanatan scriptures. This holds significant importance as it is believed to be the tree under which Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman, rested during their Vanvas. According to the Scriptures, the tree is immortal and has been a silent witness to the passage of time, making it a revered and sacred site for devotees and pilgrims. According to the Padma Puran, even during the period of cosmic dissolution (Pralay), the Akshayvat remains steadfast. For this reason, it is called Akshayvat (eternal).

    • During the time of Pralay (cosmic dissolution), Lord Vishnu rests on its leaves, which is why it is called Akshay (eternal). Not only Maharshis did meditate under this tree, but even the gods and goddesses performed penance here. For this reason, this tree is considered the abode of all the deities. According to the Padma Puran, wherever the shadow of the Akshayvat falls, it generates divinity in humans and removes their sins and sufferings. Akshayvat is regarded as a witness to all actions (Karmas).

About :

  • The bilateral ties between India and Israel have evolved significantly since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. The relationship received a major boost with the visits of high-level dignitaries from both countries that includes historic visit by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s to Israel in 2017 and reciprocal visit by Hon’ble Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu in 2018.
  • India and Israel have made significant strides in enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors such as defence, technology, agriculture and water cooperation. India’s growing stature on the global stage and Israel’s technological prowess has created avenues for deeper collaboration in these sectors. Israel’s expertise in precision farming, drip irrigation, desalination and agricultural technology has proven invaluable to India especially in addressing the challenges of water scarcity and increasing agricultural productivity. India and Israel have established 31 Agriculture Centres of Excellence in 13 Indian states that aim to benefit farmers in increasing quality and quantity of horticultural produce by innovative technologies.
  • Similarly in the field of technology and innovation, Israel’s reputation as start-up nation has paved way for extensive collaboration in emerging strategic technologies that includes artificial intelligence, smart solutions, cyber security, quantum technology contributing to our ‘Make in India initiative’. IndiaIsrael bilateral trade and economic ties have progressed rapidly from around US$ 200 million in 1992 to around US$ 10.77 billion in FY 2022-23.
  • The historical link between India and Israel dates back to several centuries. Since then, Jewish community in India thrived and flourished and today the Jewish community is vital part of our composite cultural mosaic and India is proud of their contributions. Our rich Indian diaspora in Israel serves as an organic link between the two countries that includes caregivers, students, professionals and business community.
  • India and Israel have deep sense of mutual admiration and curiosity in cultural sphere that transcends geographical boundaries. Indian movies, Cuisine, Ayurveda and Yoga is very popular in Israel. International Day of Yoga event is well attended and celebrated with great enthusiasm by Israelis. Israelis particularly the youth visit India in large numbers for tourism purposes. Most of the Hindu and Jewish religious festivals share remarkable similarities and their celebrations coincides around the same time (Diwali-Hanukkah and HoliPurim). These cultural parallels foster a sense of connection and understanding between the people of India and Israel.
  • As India and Israel look to the future, the trajectory of our relationship appears promising. Both countries are committed to deepening cooperation and exploring new frontiers of collaboration that is driven by mutual benefits and prosperity. By fostering greater diplomatic engagement, expanding trade and investment ties, and harnessing the potential of innovation and technology, India and Israel forge an enduring partnership for the 21st century.
  • The joint stamp, designed on the theme of Purim and Holi is indicative of the ideological similarities between the two societies. While Purim is the Jewish festival commemorating the survival of the Jews due to the efforts of Esther against the diabolical plot of Haman the chief minister of the Persian King Ahaseurus, to annihilate them in the Persian empire; Holi is a Hindu festival commemorating the survival of Prahlada a God loving prince from the diabolical plan of his father Hiranyakashyap plotting with his sister Holika to murder Prahlada for his devotion to God.

About :

  • In the melodious atmosphere of Gwalior, where classical music weaves its magical influence, the Tansen Samaroh has emerged as one of India’s most revered classical music events. Held annually at the Samadhi of Music Emperor Tansen in Gwalior, this festival marks its 100th year in 2024, making it perhaps the only classical music festival in India celebrated continuously for a century. Organized by the Madhya Pradesh Government, the festival is a symbol of respect for Tansen, whose legacy is central to Indian classical music.
  • Tansen, born in Behat village near Gwalior, revolutionized Indian classical music. His compositions and mastery over ragas earned him the title of Music Emperor at the Mughal court under Emperor Akbar. His legacy, immortalized in the “Veer Bhanuday Kavya,” is encapsulated in the lines:There has been no musician like Tansen, nor will there be one in the future.” His influence still resonates in the music of today, inspiring generations of musicians.
  • The Tansen Music Festival is not merely a celebration of Tansen’s music but serves as a grand confluence of classical music, drawing thousands of music lovers. The Tansen Music Festival’s roots trace back to Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia, who initiated the Urs Tansen to honor Tansen’s legacy. This festival, celebrated by both Hindu and Muslim communities, reflects the spirit of unity, Tansen’s music embodied. From its inception, it has been a symbol of harmony through music, lasting three days.
  • Gwalior’s music schools have been central to the festival’s success. Raja Mansingh, the ruler of Gwalior, is believed to have established a music school in the Gujari Mahal, where Tansen himself trained. Every year, students perform Dhrupad, Gwalior’s primary music genre, at the festival’s opening, paying homage to Tansen’s musical heritage. Behat: Tansen’s Birthplace.
  • Every year, a small tribute is held during the festival, where artists gather to honor Tansen. Additionally, the Tansen Award, presented by the Madhya Pradesh Government’s Department of Culture, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to music. Established in 1980, the award has increased in prestige and is now valued at 5 lakh rupees.
  • The centenary celebrations of the Tansen Samaroh in 2024 are designed to reflect the grandeur and cultural richness of the past 100 years.
  • Tansen’s influence will be celebrated internationally with cultural events in 20 countries, aiming to introduce his music to global audiences. Behat will also become a Music Pilgrimage destination, with monthly music sessions held to honor Tansen’s birthplace and legacy.

About :

  • The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav, an annual event initiated by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), is a landmark celebration dedicated to showcasing the vast cultural and economic potential of Northeast India. As the eight states of the NortheastArunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—are often referred to as the ‘Ashtalakshmi’ or eight forms of prosperity, this event aptly captures their essence, highlighting their contributions to India’s economic, cultural, and social fabric.
  • One of the major highlights of the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav is the textile exhibition, which includes specialized pavilions for Muga and Eri Silk. These two silk varieties are not only integral to the region’s economy but are also symbols of its sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Muga silk, with its natural golden sheen, is unique to Assam, while Eri silk is celebrated as the only “vegan silk” in the world, as it is produced without harming the silkworm. Visitors to the event will get a firsthand look at the intricate processes involved in silk production, as well as exclusive designer collections at both the Muga Silk and Eri Silk Pavilions.
  • The event will feature an array of handcrafted products that have earned GI status. These products, ranging from textiles to food items, are recognized for their authenticity and strong cultural roots. This exclusive pavilion will provide visitors with the opportunity to explore and purchase a variety of Northeast Indian GI products, such as the famed Muga silk from Assam, Manipuri black pottery, and Naga chili. The pavilion will also serve as an educational space where attendees can learn about the history, significance, and production processes of these unique items. This conclave aims to bridge the gap between traditional craftspeople and modern designers, fostering collaborations that can take the region’s crafts to new heights.
  • A special fashion show will be held to showcase the fusion of contemporary design with traditional textiles. The Fashion Show will feature top designers from the region collaborating with local artisans to create breathtaking ensembles that highlight the versatility and beauty of Northeast Indian textiles. From Muga silk gowns to Eri silk stoles, the runway will be a testament to the region’s growing influence in the global fashion industry.
  • In addition to promoting culture and fashion, the Mahotsav is a powerful tool for economic development. The Buyer-Seller Meet, Investor Round Table, and Panel Discussions, core components of the event, will bring together manufacturers, artisans, and traders from Northeast India with buyers and investors from across the country and beyond. This platform will enable direct interactions, fostering long-term business relationships and facilitating bulk orders, which will be crucial for the artisans of the region. The Mahotsav is as much a cultural celebration as it is an economic one. Each day of the event will feature Northeast India Cultural Shows, showcasing the region’s diverse and colorful traditions. Local bands and cultural performances will give visitors a taste of the region’s rich heritage.
  • Overall, the Mahotsav is not just a showcase of Northeast India’s cultural and economic potential but a celebration of its place within the broader national and global framework. Through this event, the Ministry of DoNER hopes to highlight the richness of Northeast India’s heritage while opening up new avenues for trade, investment, and collaboration, ultimately contributing to the holistic development of the region.
  • Significance of the Stamp
    • The Octagram used in the logo is inspired by the symbol “Star of Lakshmi,” which represents spirituality, material wealth, agriculture, royalty, knowledge, courage, progeny, and victory. The logo signifies the eight states of the Northeast, each bearing the manifestation of the eight forms of the goddess of wealth and prosperity. By combining the rising sun and the octagram, the logo emphasizes the importance of each state in the Northeast in leading India towards growth and prosperity.
    • The “Xorai,” a traditional utensil, is a symbol of hospitality and reverence in Assam. It is used to offer “Tamul Paan,” a betel leaf and nut mixture, to welcome guests. In sacred places like “Naamghars,” it serves as a vessel to present Prasad to the divine. Beyond its practical uses, the “Xorai” is also a cherished gift, often presented to honored individuals as a token of respect.
    • Meghalaya is renowned for its golden fruit – the pineapple. With its perfect climate and skilled farmers, this golden fruit positions the state as a leader in sustainable agriculture. Meghalaya’s pineapples are a symbol of economic vibrancy and environmental responsibility.
    • Bamboo is deeply woven into the culture and economy of Tripura. From traditional rituals to modern construction, bamboo plays a vital role. It not only strengthens homes but also empowers communities through handicrafts and sustainable industries.
    • The graceful Sangai, Manipur’s state animal, is a rare and beautiful deer. With its distinctive antlers, it is often called the dancing deer. The Sangai is an endemic and endangered subspecies of Eld’s deer found only in Manipur, India.
    • The Mithun, or the Indian Bison’s head with its impressive horns, is a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and fertility. This unique bond between humans and Mithuns reflects the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland.
    • The Cheraw dance is a cherished tradition of Mizoram and is a celebration of life, performed at various festivities. The dancers, holding bamboo staves, create intricate patterns inspired by the beauty of nature.
    • The great Indian hornbill is a symbol of courage, tradition, and ecological balance in Arunachal Pradesh. The hornbill’s beak is a mark of manhood and valor. These magnificent birds play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the forest, earning them the title “farmers of the forest.”
    • The endless knot, a symbol of eternal wisdom and compassion, is deeply revered in Sikkim. It represents the interconnectedness of all beings and the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth. This sacred symbol is often found in jewellery, religious artifacts, and traditional art forms, reminding us of the profound teachings of Buddhism.

About :

  • Kittur, formerly known as ‘Geejaganahalli’ became renowned as the seat of power for the Kittur kings between 1585 and 1824 A.D. The principality was founded by brothers Hiremalla Shetty and Chikkamalla Shetty, who were gifted the Kittur area by Adilshahi, the king of Bijapur, in recognition of their valor and service.
  • Initially, the capital was located in Sampagaon, and Kittur was governed by 12 notable kings, with Allappagouda Desai, Mudimallappagouda Desai, and Mallasarja Desai being the most prominent. Under Allappagouda’s rule, Kittur’s fort and palace were constructed, establishing it as a significant center.
  • King Mallasarja (1782-1816 A.D.) brought great fame to Kittur. However, his achievements drew the envy of Baji Rao II, the Peshwa of Pune, who conspired to detain him, leading to Mallasarja’s untimely death in 1816. Queen Channamma, his second wife, took on the reins of administration after the death of Shivalinga Rudrasarja, the last king.
  • The Struggle Against British Rule
    • The British began to interfere in Kittur’s administration after Shivalinga’s death in 1824. Collector Thackeray’s rude conduct and seizure of the treasury sparked Queen Channamma’s defiance. On October 23, 1824, in a historic battle, her forces defeated the British, resulting in Thackeray’s death at the hands of Amatur Balappa, a brave bodyguard.
    • However, following negotiations that failed, the British launched a massive attack on Kittur on December 3, 1824. After three days of fierce fighting, the Kittur army was betrayed and ultimately defeated. Queen Channamma was captured and imprisoned at Bailahongal Fort, where she passed away on February 2, 1829. Her indomitable spirit and resistance made her a pioneering figure in India’s struggle for independence, earning her the title “Pole Star of Indian Independence.”
  • Legacy of Resistance
    • Even after her defeat, Queen Channamma’s legacy inspired further uprisings. Loyalists like Sangolli Rayanna led significant rebellions against British rule. Despite facing severe reprisals, including executions, their efforts showcased the undying patriotism and courage that characterized Kittur’s fight for freedom.
  • Kittur Palace and Monuments
    • The Kittur Fort and Palace, built between 1660 and 1691 A.D. during Allappagouda Desai’s reign, are architectural marvels, although the British later demolished much of the palace. Today, the ruins provide a glimpse into its grandeur, featuring guest rooms, a Darbar hall, and unique water supply systems, including copper pipes and stone tanks.

About :

  • Odisha is a confluence of the Aryan, Dravidian and Adivasi cultures. Most festivals, art and cultural traditions in the state bring out some parts of these cultures. Sambalpur serves as the gateway to the enchanting western zone of Odisha. It is the epicentre of a very high profile and rich culture. Its art and culture is a unique proposition of dance, music, handicraft, beliefs, social values, traditional practices etc.
  • Sambalpuri Bandha (Ikat) work or Sambalpuri work contains the warp and the weft tie-dyed before weaving. This is produced in Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Boudh and Sonepur Districts of Odisha. The traditional garment has the motifs like Sankha (conch-shell), Chakra (wheel), Phula (flower). These have deep symbolism with the native Odia colours i.e., red, black and white representing Odia culture along with the colour of the face of Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha.
  • The traditional craftsmanship of ‘Bandhakala’, the tie-dye art reflected in their intricate weaves, also known as ‘Sambalpuri Ikat’. In this technique, the threads are first tie-dyed and later woven into a fabric, with the entire process taking as long as many weeks. The Ikat sarees gained popularity outside Odisha in the 1980-90s. The yarns or set of yarns so produced are called ‘Bandha’. This art is believed to have been migrated to Odisha along with Bhulia community who fled Northern India in the year 1192 A.D. The colours consisted mainly of vegetable colours. The Bandha Sarees were known as ‘Bhulia Kapta’.
  • Sambalpuri fabric owes a great deal to the pioneering efforts of Shri Radhashyam Meher, who brought about a radical movement in the skills of the craftsmen and the quality of the products. Other master craftsmen who contributed to the development of Sambalpuri Textiles were Padma Shri Kailash Chandra Meher, Padma Shri Kunja Bihari Meher, Padma Shri Chaturbhuja Meher and Padma Shri Krutarth Acharya along with Handloom Technologist Shri Ramakrushna Meher (National Awardee). Bandha craftsmen are also masters of the ‘extra warp’ and ‘extra weft’ style of designing which can be seen in almost all forms of Bandha Textiles. Radhashyam Meher also produced Khadi textiles using Bandha Art. Shri Meher has established his propriety at Sambalpur for the research, production and marketing of Sambalpuri Textiles.
  • Acknowledging Radhashyam Meher’s unparalleled contributions to the growth and popularity of Bandha art, the Ministry of Textiles of Government of India has sponsored Textile Exhibition coinciding with his birth anniversary on 20th November and organised by the Director of Textiles of Government Of Odisha. Sagarpalli is a large village hosting around 500 Bhulias (weaver families). This is one of the largest weaving villages in Sonepur district, a bastion of Sambalpuri sarees. Other areas affluent with Handloom Weavers are Barpalli, Tarava, Bijepur, Patnagarh and Bargarh.
  • Nuakhai festival has been a tradition since 12th century A.D. People of Western Odisha, spreading across Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Kalahandi and adjoining areas of Simdega in Jharkhand celebrate this festival with great joy and happiness. Western Odisha celebrates this agricultural festival which is known as ‘Nuakhai’. The importance of agriculture is deeply embedded in the economic development of this State.
  • This is the annual harvest festival in Odisha. Nuakhai is observed to welcome the newly harvested rice of the season. According to the Odia Hindu Calendar, it is observed on Panchami Tithi of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadraba, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. The objective of this festival is to celebrate social bonding and strong family ties. The festival has its origin from the Vedic period where the Rishis used to discuss Panchyajna. The Pralambana Yajna is meant for cutting new crops and offering prayers to mother Goddess. People visit their native place during the festival. Nuakhai festival has nine sets of rituals that begin from Behrana to concluding with the Juhar Bhet. This day is considered as auspicious and one of the most important days marked in the calendar of the Western Odisha. Goddess Samalei, the presiding deity of the land is worshipped and is offered food prepared out of new crop or Nabanna.
  • Sitala Sasthi Yatra is a sacred Hindu Festival celebrated in Western Odisha in which the divine couple’s marriage is solemnised. Sitala Sasthi is observed on the sixth day of the Jyestha month during Shukla Pakshya. People observing this festival believe that Lord Shiva represents scorching heat of summer while Goddess Parvati signifies the first rain. This holy/sacred wedding is solemnised for a good monsoon.
  • The Ministry of Culture of Government of India has accorded National Festival status to Dhanu Yatra in 2014. The Yatra is performed in many places in Western Odisha. The major one of these is the original one at Bargarh. It is about the episodes from birth of Lord Sri Krishna to death of demon king Kansa including Krishna and Balaram’s visit to Mathura to witness the Dhanu Yatra Ceremony of the king Kansa. The interesting fact is that there is no written script used in these enactments. This has become the World’s largest open-air theatre till date.
  • Sambalpuri Folk Dance, a dance form owes its origin to the Western part of Odisha, particularly the erstwhile Sambalpur District. This place is known for its sculpturesque Odissi dance form. Deriving its name from the presiding deity of SambalpurSamalei’, the dance form has a distinct cultural identity of its own. This dance is usually performed during festivals i.e. Dussehra, Nuakhai etc. Accompanied by the rhythm of ‘Panchavadya’ i.e. the 5 local instruments Dhol, Tasha, Nishaan, Jhanjh and Muhuri coupled with the tinkling of Ghungurus, the creative blends of both traditional and modern scintillating movements punctuated with teaming pauses.

About :

  • Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539) was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His birth is celebrated worldwide as Guru Nanak Guru Purab on Kartik Pooranmashi, the full moon day in the month of Katak (October-November). He travelled far and wide teaching people the message of one God. His preaching is registered in the form of 974 poetic hymns in the holy text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism gave a league of extraordinary men that fought for truth and became pillars of courage. Their places of worship called Gurudwaras, are sacred shrines that not only render spiritual comfort but also offer insight into how Sikhism has sustained.
  • India Post issues a set of five Commemorative Postage Stamps to mark the occasion of “550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji”. These stamps feature five select Gurudwaras, considered extremely sacred, as they are situated at locations where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent considerable time and lived there during his spiritual sojourn.
  • Gurudwara Nanak Lama Sahib, Chungthang
    • This is a beautiful, historical Gurudwara nestled in the Himalayas at Chungthang in North Sikkim, located 95 kilometres from Gangtok at an elevation of almost 18,000 feet above sea level. Interestingly, it is run by the Indian Army. Guru Nanak Dev ji visited this place while returning from Tibet during the 4th Udasi (Yatra). This place was a barren land. Guru Nanak threw a handful of paddy in that place. Now Chungthang is the only place in the surrounding areas where paddy grows in abundance. Another legend states that in this plateau the yak grazers approached Guru Nanak with a request, that they did not find water in winter as it got frozen allover with the temperature falling to minus 35 degrees. Guru Nanak Dev ji hit the perpetually snow-covered Guru Dongmar Lake with his stick to provide water to the grazers. The ice melted giving way to crystal clear water. Since then the water of the lake has never frozen. Guru Nanak further blessed the lake, saying, ‘Whosoever takes the water of this lake will gain virility and strength and will be blessed with children.’ The Gurudwara is situated at the confluence of two rivers: River Lachen and Lachung Chu, both tributaries of the River Teesta. The architecture of the Gurudwara maintains the typical dome and arch style as other Gurudwaras of the country but is influenced by the architecture and design of Tibetan monasteries.
  • Gurudwara Darbar Sahib, Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur
    • Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Dera Baba Nanak, is situated on the banks of river Ravi. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, settled and mingled with the Almighty near the village Pakhoke Mehmaran, opposite to the present town and named it Kartarpur – a town which now lies across the border in Pakistan. The Bedis (Khatris), descendants of Guru Nanak built a new town and named it Dera Baba Nanak after their ancestor. Pilgrims come to pay homage to this Gurudwara in large numbers. Dera Baba Nanak is a historical town and has many lanes and houses that have been preserved since the time of Guru Nanak. Also from this town, pilgrims can see Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur across the border in Pakistan. Guru Nanak came here after his first Udasi (tour) during December 1515 AD to meet members of his family. In November 2019, a corridor is going to be opened connecting the two Gurudwaras located at Dera Baba Nanak in India and Kartarpur across the border.
  • Gurudwara Janamasthan, Nankana Sahib
    • Gurudwara Janamasthan also referred to as Gurudwara Nankana Sahib was built at the site where Guru Nanak was born to Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta. The shrine is located in the city of Nankana Sahib, near Lahore in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The Gurudwara forms part of an ensemble of nine important Gurudwaras in Nankana Sahib. The shrine is frequently visited by Sikh yatris as part of a pilgrimage route in Pakistan. The first Gurudwara is believed to have been built at the site in the 16th century by the grandson of Guru Nanak, Baba Dharam Chand. The current Gurudwara was built by Ranjit Singh in the 19th century and includes a domed sanctum with an attached rectangular pavilion, surrounded by a vast walled compound.
  • Gurudwara Ber Sahib, Sultanpur Lodhi
    • Gurudwara Ber Sahib, the principal shrine at Sultanpur, is situated on the bank of the rivulet Kali Bein. Guru Nanak Dev Ji performed his morning ablutions in the rivulet and then sat under a Ber tree to meditate. Guru Ji meditated under this tree daily for over 14 years. Gurudwara Ber Sahib is built by the side of this old Ber tree. The present building of the Gurudwara was built by Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. Standing on a high plinth and entered through a portico, the Gurudwara is supported by octagonal columns and a small entrance gallery with a high ceiling. At the far end, marked off by a high archway decorated with floral designs in stucco, is the sanctum sanctorum, where the Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a white marble canopied throne. Besides the daily services and observance of important Sikh anniversaries, a largely attended fair takes place each November to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Sultanpur Lodhi is the nerve centre of the celebrations of the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
  • Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib, Bidar
    • One of the most famous Gurudwaras of South India, Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib is located at Bidar in Karnataka. Built a year after India’s independence in 1948, the Gurudwara is famous for its majestic shrine, lush gardens and an expansive pool, amidst a valley surrounded by hills on three sides. The Gurudwara comprises different sections including Darbar Sahib, Langar Hall and Diwan Hall. It is believed that a dip in the tank of the holy water in front of the Gurudwara stairs will cleanse the body and soul of all the sins. The Gurudwara got its name after a popular incident which took place here; according to legend, Guru Nanak was staying on the outskirts of Bidar, where there was shortage of water and despite the efforts of the village people, drinkable water was hard to find. It is believed that Guru Nanak touched a part of the hillside with his toes and removed some debris after which a fountain of sweet water gushed out from there. Today, on the side of the fountain, is where the Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib stands.

About :

  • Kumbh Mela (the festival of the sacred pitcher) is a religious pilgrimage that is celebrated four times over a course of 12 years. Kumbh Mela is anchored in Hindu mythology and is the largest public gathering and collective act of faith, anywhere in the world. The Mela draws tens of millions of pilgrims over the course of approximately 48 days to bathe at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mystical Sarasvati. Primarily, this congregation includes ascetics, saints, sadhus, sadhvis, kalpvasis and pilgrims from all walks of life.
  • The origin of Kumbh Mela was transcribed by the 8th-century philosopher Shankara. The term ‘Kumbh’ comes from the root ‘kumbhak’ (the sacred pitcher of elixir of immorality). The founding myth of the Kumbh Mela points out to the Puranas. It recounts how Gods and demons fought over the sacred pitcher (Kumbh) of Amrit (nectar of immortality) called the Ratna of Samudra Manthan. It is widely believed that Lord Vishnu (disguised as the enchantress ‘Mohini’) whisked the Kumbh out of the grasp of the covetous demons who had tried to claim it. As he took it heavenwards, a few drops of the precious nectar fell on the four sacred sites we know as Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Prayag. The flight and the following pursuit is said to have lasted twelve divine days which is equivalent to twelve human years and therefore, the Mela is celebrated every twelve years, staggered at each of the four sacred sites in this cycle. The corresponding rivers are believed to have turned into Amrit at the cosmic moment, giving pilgrims the chance to bathe in the essence of purity, auspiciousness and immortality.
  • There is a mention of ‘Kumbh’ and the bathing ritual associated with it in the Rig Veda. It speaks of the benefits of bathing at sangam during this period, elimination of negative influences and rejuvenation of mind and soul. Payers for the ‘Kumbh’ are also expressed in Atharva Veda and Yajur Veda. The main bathing days this time are during Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri.
  • Kumbh Mela got widespread recognition across geographies during the rule of King Harshvardhana (c. 590-647 CE) as per historical evidences. Famous traveler Hsuan Tsang has prominently mentioned the grandeur of Kumbh Mela in his travelogue. The traveler’s account also summarizes King Harsh’s charities at the confluence of holy rivers where he gave gifts and donations to the scholars and sanyasis. King Harsh used to hold a great quinquennial assembly on the sands of the holy confluence at Prayag and would distribute all his possessions.
  • The geographical location of Kumbh Mela spans over four locations in India and the Mela site keeps rotating between one of the four pilgrimages on four sacred rivers as per astrological conditions. Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon and the Jupiter. The celebrations occur at the exact moment when these positions are fully occupied, as it is considered to be the holiest time.
  • The Kumbh Mela is an event that intrinsically encapsulates the science of astronomy, astrology, spirituality, ritualistic traditions and socio-cultural customs and practices, making it extremely rich in knowledge.
  • Pilgrims to the Kumbh Mela come from all sections of the society ranging from Sadhus (saints) and Naga Sadhus who practice ‘sadhana’ and keenly follow a strict path of spiritual discipline, to Hermits who leave their seclusion and come to visit the civilization only during the Kumbh Mela, to seekers of spirituality and to common people practising Hinduism.
  • During the Kumbh Mela, a number of ceremonies take place; the traditional procession of Akharas called ‘Peshwai’ on elephant backs, horses and chariots, the shining swords and rituals of Naga Sadhus during ‘Shahi Snaan’ and many other cultural activities that attract millions of pilgrims to attend the Kumbh Mela.
  • The Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj is widely considered as the most significant among all the Kumbh festivals held at other locations. It is considered as the source of light and knowledge. It is believed that Prajapati Brahma performed Ashvamedha Yajna at Dashashvamedha Ghat situated at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna and created the universe due to which, it is the most famous and significant among all other Kumbh festivals.
  • Apart from its primary bathing rituals, the social aspect of the festival also revolves around the various Yajnas, the chanting of Vedic Mantras, holy educations, traditional dances, devotional songs, programs based on mythical stories and prayers. Religious assemblies are held where doctrines are debated, standardized and conducted by renowned saints and sages. A prominent part of the festival is the act of donations to the poor and helpless, to the saints and to cows. Donations range from basic food and clothing to even precious metals.
  • Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, is considered to be the “world’s largest congregation of religious pilgrims”. An estimated 120 million people visited Kumbh Mela in 2013 in Prayagraj over a two-month period, including over 30 million on a single day, on 10 February 2013 (the day of Mauni Amavasya). This year, the attendance is expected to hit a record high. Kumbh Mela has been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Uttar Pradesh Government has envisioned Kumbh Mela 2019 at Prayagraj as ‘Divya Kumbh, Bhavya Kumbh’.
  • The welfare of all beings, sharing of noble thoughts and maintaining good relationships with all the beings across the world is the core message prevalent during the Kumbh festival. Kumbh has been spiritually uniting the people of India and across the world since time immemorial and will continue doing so for years to come.
