• The history of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) in India is a tale of unyielding dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment. For a century, these valiant caregivers have played a pivotal role in the Armed Forces Health Care systems, extending their Services to soldiers, their families, and various humanitarian efforts.
• The Military Nursing Service was the earliest type of nursing to evolve in the late 19^th Century. Modern nursing was founded after the Crimean War between Turkey and Russia in 1854-1856. The Army Nursing Service was established in 1888. In 1896, the Nursing Service was renamed as Indian Army Nursing Service. In 1914, 473 Indian nurses were appointed during World War I, who went all over with the Indian soldiers and rendered exceptional services. On 1^st October 1926, the permanent Nursing Service came into being with 55 nurses. During World War II, Indian nurses were at the war front with courage and valour; many nurses were taken Prisoners of War and many laid down their lives for the country. On 15^th September 1943, an ordinance was promulgated to constitute a force to be called the Military Nursing Service (India) as part of the Armed Forces of India.
• The terms and conditions for the grant of regular commission in the MNS were laid by Army Instruction 274/50 on 12 August 1950. The cadre strength of service has grown from 1110 to 5368. The Officers of Military Nursing Service undergo further specialisation through Post Basic (PB) BSc, MSc and PB Diploma in clinical specialities. The Military Nursing Service is a Cadre of highly skilled, competent officers.
• The integration of Military Hospitals and the introduction of modern medical practices enhanced the role of military nurses. The Military Nursing Service has a rich history of dedication and exemplary service in both war and peace. The 1962 Sino-Indian War, 1971 Indo-Pak War and Kargil War underscored the pivotal role of the Military Nursing Service in times of conflict, demonstrating exceptional courage and valour.
• Military Nursing Officers participated in UN Peacekeeping Missions in Congo, Lebanon, South Sudan and in friendly foreign hospitals, earning respect and admiration on the global stage. They also played a significant role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Care of war-wounded patients in times of agony and despair requires strong determination. Hence, there was a requirement to prepare nurses for the Army. Accordingly, nurses were trained in selected civil hospitals. The Government of India sanctioned two schools of Nursing in 1950 in Pune and Delhi. The schools were gradually upgraded to the College of Nursing and at present, there are six Colleges of Nursing across the country in Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Lucknow. These institutions provide skill-based education for BSc Nursing, Master’s in Nursing Subjects and Post Basic (PB) diploma in 13 clinical specialities.
• The dedication and devotion to duty exhibited by the officers of the Military Nursing Service have been widely recognised. They have received distinguished honours such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and Mention in Despatches, along with civilian awards like the Sarojini Khosla Nightingale Award, Nalwa Medal, and Mahila Shiromani Award.
• On January 26, 2024, history was made when 144 Military Nursing Service officers marched on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade as part of the All-Women Contingent of the Armed Forces Medical Services.

• The President’s Body Guard was raised at Benaras, in 1773 with 50 Horses and Sowars, and additionally, 50 Horses & Sowars were contributed by Raja Chait Singh of Benaras, to form the Governor’s Body Guard. The Regiment was later christened as Governor General’s Body Guard (GGBG) in 1784, Viceroy’s Bodyguard (VRBG) in 1857, 44 Divisional Reconnaissance Squadron (GGBG) in 1944, Governor General’s Body Guard (GGBG) in 1946, Governor General’s Body Guard (India) in 1947, and The President’s Body Guard (PBG) wef 1950.
• Being the senior-most Regiment, The PBG has the ‘Right of Line’ over all other Corps/Regiments of the Indian Army, and the Regiment is the Household Cavalry and ‘Personal Troops of The President of India’. The Regiment has dual role, in war – under aegis of the Parachute Formation, subject to approval of the President, and in peace – ceremonial duties at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
• The PBG is the oldest Horsed Cavalry, Armoured since 1942 (World War II) and Airborne since 1944 (World War II). In consonance with its mandate, each soldier is a trained ‘Cavalry Horse Rider, Paratrooper and Armoured Warrior. Thereby, making the technical skill-set of these soldiers unique and unparalleled in the Indian Army, and the world. The Regiment has the singular distinction of being the only true Airborne Cavalry Regiment in the world.
• In its exceptional history The PBG has successfully participated in many battles in the pre-independence era and has earned its Battle Honours – namely Java, Ava, Maharajpore, Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Aliwal & Sabraon. Post-independence, the Regiment has been called to arms in all wars, and has been deployed for operations at Chushul (1962) and Gadra Road (1965). In 1971, the Regiment provided protection to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. During Operation VIJAY (1999), Operation PARAKRAM (2000), and Operation SINDOOR (2025) the troops of The PBG continued to serve in operational areas, during extra regimental employment. The personnel of The PBG have been deployed at Super High Altitude Areas in Siachen Glacier since 1993, till date. The Regiment has also contributed troops for the UNPKF in Somalia, Angola, Sierra Leone & Sudan.
• The PBG is the only Regiment which is permitted two ‘Standards’, namely the President’s Standard of Bodyguard, and the Regimental Standard of The PBG. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first Hon’ble President of India, presented the first ever Standard of Bodyguard, followed by the Regimental Standard of The PBG in 1958. Thereafter, in 1963, Dr S Radhakrishnan, the then Hon’ble President of India, renewed both the Standards.
• On 30 September 2023 the Regiment completed 250 years of glorious service since its raising. On 16 November 2023, during the Sestercentennial Celebrations (250 years), The PBG was presented a new Standard of Bodyguard, and the Regimental Standard of the PBG was renewed by Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, after a period of 60 years.
• The PBG has a tradition of two Silver Trumpets and Trumpet Banners. The Presidential Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner was first awarded in 1957 by Dr Rajendra Prasad, the then Hon’ble President of India. This tradition is maintained by each incumbent President, by presentation of a new Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner, to be carried during the respective Presidency. Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, presented her Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner to The PBG on 27 October 2022. In recognition of 75 years of glorious service since the designation as The PBG in 1950, for the first time ever, the Regimental Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner of The PBG will give way to the Diamond Jubilee Silver Trumpet and Trumpet Banner, by Smt Draupadi Murmu, The Hon’ble President of India, on 30 September 2025.
• Being a horse holding Regiment, The PBG has won numerous medals at national & international level including one gold medal in Asian Games, (Puissance) National record of 195 cm Show Jumping and has the honour of receiving two Arjuna Awards for Polo and Equestrian Sports. In the current presidency, The PBG has won 170 Medals at the Equestrian Federation of India/ National Level Equestrian Events. The Regiment has established itself as the ‘Army Champion’ at the Army Equestrian Championship held in Bengaluru in 2024.
• Since 1947, The PBG has served one Governor General and 15 Presidents of India. The Regiment has also escorted all the Heads of States, Presidents and Kings of nations visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan since 1947. The PBG is a unique military unit, intricately woven into the fabric of the history of our Nation, Rashtrapati Bhavan to include the lives & times of each President, and the Indian Army. The PBG is indeed a unique link to our deep cultural connect with the horses, rich heritage of excellence in horsemanship, and the illustrious traditions of Horsed Cavalry in India.

• The battalion was raised in 1825 as the 2^nd Extra Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry at erstwhile Cawnpore. It has a rich and glorious history spanning two centuries, throughout which, the battalion has consistently displayed bravery, resilience and sacrifice across diverse conflicts and terrains.
• In 1828, it was renamed as 70^th Bengal Native Infantry. Early campaigns in which the battalion was inducted include the Battle of Maharajpur (1843) and the Second Sikh War (1848-49), earning battle honours of Punjab, Chillianwallah and Gujarat. Serving with the Indian Expeditionary Force under British rule, the regiment saw action in China (1858-59), Bhutan (1865), and the Second Afghan War (1878-80) where the battalion was honoured with Battle Honours of China, Bhutan and Afghanistan. The saga of courage followed with the Burma War (1885-87) and the Hazara Expedition (1891) where the battle honour of Burma was bestowed on the Battalion. As the 11^th Rajputs, the regiment fought in World War I across multiple theatres, including France, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, and later in the Afghan War (1919) earning the Battle Honour of Mesopotamia. Re-designated as the 5^th Battalion, 7^th Rajput Regiment, it fought its epochal last stand and suffered heavy losses defending Hong Kong during World War II where it earned its last pre-independence battle honour of Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the magnitude of loss of personnel due to death, and being taken prisoners of war was so grave that the battalion had to be demobilised after World War II. Captain Mateen Ahmed Ansari was posthumously awarded with George Cross, the only one held by the entire Rajput Regiment, for his unwavering courage in the face of brutal Japanese forces.
• The saga of valour does not end here. The Battalion was re-raised as 5^th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in 1962, by Lt Col Brijpal Singh Vr C at Fatehgarh. Post re-raising, the battalion participated in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, and Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, where it again demonstrated its mettle. During Operation Pawan, Hav Naipal Singh was posthumously awarded Vir Chakra for supreme sacrifice against the fierce and resilient LTTE.
• The battalion also served in Operation Rakshak at challenging locations in the high altitude areas and Operation Vijay. The battalion notably achieved an unscathed tenure during Operation Meghdoot on the challenging Siachen Glacier, a rare feat for any unit guarding the frozen frontier. The Battalion has a unique distinction of presenting Guard Of Honour to three presidents of India, namely Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr Pranab Mukherjee and Shri Ramnath Kovind. In the year 2018, the battalion represented the country at a global platform in the Ex SCO Peace Mission held at Chebarkul, Russia, one of a kind exercise which saw participation of seven foreign countries including Russia, China and Pakistan. It was the first instance when Indian and Pakistani forces participated in a friendly military exercise. With four consecutive unit citations in last decade, including 02 x Chief of Army Staff Unit Citation for its challenging tenures in the field at Kupwara and Poonch and 02 x GOC-in-C Unit Citations at Jutogh and Sri Ganganagar for exceptional performance of duties in peace tenure, the battalion is one of the most professional infantry units of the Indian Army.
• During its glorious 200 years, the Rajputs have proved their mettle while fighting in frozen glaciers, mountains, plains, beaches and deserts. Its sterling performance has always showcased professionalism at the epitome of excellence. The brave hearts from this unit have risen to the occasion and displayed their enduring spirit, with utter disregard to their personal safety, laying down their lives in the service of the nation. Due to its glorious history, presently the battalion is acknowledged as Prachand Paanch.

• Kittur, formerly known as ‘Geejaganahalli’ became renowned as the seat of power for the Kittur kings between 1585 and 1824 A.D. The principality was founded by brothers Hiremalla Shetty and Chikkamalla Shetty, who were gifted the Kittur area by Adilshahi, the king of Bijapur, in recognition of their valor and service.
• Initially, the capital was located in Sampagaon, and Kittur was governed by 12 notable kings, with Allappagouda Desai, Mudimallappagouda Desai, and Mallasarja Desai being the most prominent. Under Allappagouda’s rule, Kittur’s fort and palace were constructed, establishing it as a significant center.
• King Mallasarja (1782-1816 A.D.) brought great fame to Kittur. However, his achievements drew the envy of Baji Rao II, the Peshwa of Pune, who conspired to detain him, leading to Mallasarja’s untimely death in 1816. Queen Channamma, his second wife, took on the reins of administration after the death of Shivalinga Rudrasarja, the last king.
• The Struggle Against British Rule
  • The British began to interfere in Kittur’s administration after Shivalinga’s death in 1824. Collector Thackeray’s rude conduct and seizure of the treasury sparked Queen Channamma’s defiance. On October 23, 1824, in a historic battle, her forces defeated the British, resulting in Thackeray’s death at the hands of Amatur Balappa, a brave bodyguard.
  • However, following negotiations that failed, the British launched a massive attack on Kittur on December 3, 1824. After three days of fierce fighting, the Kittur army was betrayed and ultimately defeated. Queen Channamma was captured and imprisoned at Bailahongal Fort, where she passed away on February 2, 1829. Her indomitable spirit and resistance made her a pioneering figure in India’s struggle for independence, earning her the title “Pole Star of Indian Independence.”
• Legacy of Resistance
  • Even after her defeat, Queen Channamma’s legacy inspired further uprisings. Loyalists like Sangolli Rayanna led significant rebellions against British rule. Despite facing severe reprisals, including executions, their efforts showcased the undying patriotism and courage that characterized Kittur’s fight for freedom.
• Kittur Palace and Monuments
  • The Kittur Fort and Palace, built between 1660 and 1691 A.D. during Allappagouda Desai’s reign, are architectural marvels, although the British later demolished much of the palace. Today, the ruins provide a glimpse into its grandeur, featuring guest rooms, a Darbar hall, and unique water supply systems, including copper pipes and stone tanks.

• The Indian Army has an unparalleled military tradition of determination, bravery and sacrifice led by its junior leaders in battle. This tradition manifested in the summer of 1999, when Operation Vijay was launched by the Indian Army to evict Pakistani intruders from the icy heights of Dras, Kargil and Batalik Sectors of Ladakh. Raw courage, daring, tenacity and heroic efforts displayed by our soldiers and young officers ensured triumph of the Indian Army in this operation also referred to as the Kargil War.
• Post-Independence Pakistan’s obsession with annexing Kashmir saw several failed military ventures and finally it resorted to Operation Badr whereby while extending the olive branch during the Lahore Summit in February 1999, it surreptitiously occupied the winter vacated posts in the Kargil District of Ladakh. This was done to cut off National Highway (NH) – 1 with an overall aim to sever Ladakh from Kashmir thereby forcing the vacation of Siachen Glacier.
• The Pakistani intrusions took place along the heights of Mashkoh Valley, Tololing and Tiger Hill in Dras Sector; the glaciated heights of Kaksar; Batalik and Ganashok valleys astride the Indus River and in Chorbat La and Turtuk Sectors. The engagements that took place here were classic examples of intense infantry operations in high altitude supported by intimate and high volume artillery barrages. The Indian Army supported by the Indian Air Force began systematically clearing the heights overlooking the NH – 1 including Tololing, Tiger Hill and Pt 4875 and with the NH-1 having been secured, proceeded to clear the rest of the intrusions along the Line of Control.
• The phenomenal tactical and logistical challenges posed to the Indian Army were overcome by a combination of innovation, determination and courage. The intensity of this short war of less than three months, can be measured by the fact that 85 major and minor units participated in war with 559 Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Soldiers making the Supreme Sacrifice and four Param Vir Chakras, 10 Mahavir Chakras and 69 Vir Chakras were awarded. Theatre and Battle Honours were awarded to 29 units while 17 units received the Chief of Army Staff Unit Citations for gallantry during the operations.
• With the advent of satellite television, Operation Vijay became India’s first battle that was taken into the homes across our country by the media and soon Kargil, Batalik, Dras, Muskoh and Turtuk became household names. On 26 July 2024, the Silver Jubilee of the Kargil War, we rededicate ourselves to the memory of the braves who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay, 1999.

• The Bombay Engineer Group, popularly known as ‘The Bombay Sappers’, is one of the three Groups of the Corps of Engineers. The origin of the Group can be traced back to a company of Pioneer Lascars raised in Bombay in 1777 as a part of the Bombay Presidency. However, according to the officially accepted records, the history of the Bombay Engineer Group dates back to 1820, when the Pioneer Lascars were re-organized into Sappers and Miners. Recognizing the services rendered by the Group during the First World War, the title ‘Royal’ was awarded to it in 1921.
• The Bombay Sappers and Miners earned their first Battle Honour, Beni-Boo-Ali, in Arabia in 1821 i.e. within a year of reorganizing. Since then, the Group has given an excellent account of itself with 34 Battle Honours and 25 Theatre Honours during the pre-independence era and three Battle Honours and six Theatre Honours, 10 COAS Unit Citations, two COAS Certificate of Appreciation, two VCOAS Unit Appreciation 50 GOC-in-C Unit Citations and one GOC-in-C Certificate of Appreciation after independence, besides six Governor Citations which are a testimony to the devotion and dedication of the gallant soldiers of the Group.
• The Group is accredited with the Victoria Cross awarded to 2Lt (later Lt Gen) PS Bhagat for the most conspicuous gallantry in the Middle East in World War II, the Param Vir Chakra awarded to 2Lt (later Maj) RR Rane for clearing of mine fields and road blocks in Rajouri sector during 1948 Indo-Pak War and the Ashok Chakra awarded to Nb Sub Gurnam Singh posthumously on 23 Sep 1973 for saving the lives of men under his command during a demonstration for visiting staff and student officers of the Defence Services Staff College. Thus, the Group has the distinction of winning the three highest awards for individual bravery – this is something unique in the annals of the Indian Army.
• The Bombay Sappers joined the club of a select few, when they received the Regimental Colours from Shri R Venkataraman, the then President of India, on 21 Feb 1990.
• Over the past two centuries, the Bombay Sappers have carved a special niche for themselves in the chronicles of the Indian Army. They have not only proved their prowess in battle, but have also utilised their military and technical skills in the development of the nation.
• The Bombay Sappers War Memorial proudly adorns the entrance to the Parade Ground in remembrance of the officers and men who laid down their lives during the First World War. The foundation was laid on 17^th Feb 1923 by Col BB Russel, DSO, RE, who was Commandant of the Centre from 1905-1909 and who had come specifically for this event.
• Unveiled by the Governor of Bombay on 10 Sep 1924, the Memorial was built entirely by men of the Corps and comprises a stone cenotaph with inscriptions in English, Urdu, Gurmukhi and Marathi.
• In Aug 1979, the base has been extended and stone satellites adorn four corners, each satellite is having four faces of marble on which new inscriptions can be etched, as it had long been desired to periodically update the inscription on the War Memorial so as to cover subsequent operation also. These four satellites have been ceremoniously fenced with an opening on each side to enable memorial services to be conducted.
• In 2023, ascending walls adorned with the names of the Bravehearts have been added, to pay tribute to the fallen comrades and commemorate a century of existence of this iconic memorial.

• Chinese aggression of 1962 gave a denting shock to India. The Indian policy makers and strategist were compelled to rethink about the national security vis-à-vis its neighbors particularly China. Besides addressing military issues, a need was realized for an out of box solution which led to the creation of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a unique and unconventional organization, designed to work in the far-flung, strategic but vulnerable border areas, motivating the border population across several states to work as a cohesive population aware of the threats from across the border and ready to respond in their own way.
• The humble beginning of Special Service Bureau was made in 1963 under Cabinet Secretariat in Tezpur (Assam) and in the North-Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA), later re-named as Arunachal Pradesh. SSB soon spread out into North Bengal, Hills of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. In the next two decades, SSB extended its footprints to the border areas of Manipur, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Guwahati, South Bengal and Nagaland. Guided by its motto of “Service, Security and Brotherhood”, SSB soon became a household name in the border areas and it was better understood as People’s Force.
• SSB carefully identified the needs of the border people to provide medical, veterinary, infrastructural and several other civic programmes for the ill-provided and vulnerable communities along the border, generally away from the reach of Government agencies. SSB virtually became the face of the Indian Government in these areas. The border men and women volunteered to learn nation building and protection of the same.
• The Kargil war and its aftermath made the policy makers to go to the drawing board once again and the Group of Ministers recommended that the role of the SSB should be altered from “People’s Force” to “Men in Uniform” guarding 1751 kms long Indo-Nepal border. In 2001, the Special Service Bureau became Sashastra Seema Bal and its officers and men were seen going about their business now in fatigues. Later in 2004, SSB was also given the responsibility of guarding 699 km long Indo-Bhutan border. Working under the Ministry of Home affairs, SSB is now spread along the international borders in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and part of Arunachal Pradesh. SSB continues to carry the flavour of its old role as warriors of perception management. In recognition of its services, the President of India has presented Colour of SSB in 2004.
• SSB is in expansion mode by 2026. SSB will become formidable force providing opportunity to serve the nation to 1 lac personnel in various ranks. Today it is 89904 officers and men maintaining a vigil on 2450 kms long Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders. The task of providing 24 x 7 vigil is not easy in difficult and diverse terrain ranging from Tarai region to the rainforests of Assam and high altitude inhospitable terrain of Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim.
• The SSB Jawan is a happy soldier, content with his job profile and welfare measures undertaken in the force. It is a force of choice for the border population of states in which SSB is deployed. SSB comprises six frontiers – Ranikhet, Lucknow, Patna, Siliguri, Guwahati, Tezpur, Eighteen sectors – Almora, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Gorakhpur, Bettiah, Muzaffarpur, Purnea, Ranidanga, Gangtok, Jalpaiguri, Bongaigaon, Rangia, Bezpara, Bomdila, (Spl. Ops.) Srinagar, Jammu, Gaya & Bhilai and 59 Battalions. 05 Battalions are in I.S. duties in J&K, 07 Battalions in Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh of LWE duties.
• SSB plays an important role in curbing anti-national activities (apprehension of third Country National, movement attempting illegal cross border) and cross border crime, be it FICN (Fake Indian Currency Note), narcotics, wild life trade, arms peddling, human trafficking etc. The presence of SSB has indirectly contributed to conservation of our pristine forests and wild life sanctuaries right from Uttarakhand to Arunachal Pradesh. SSB is deployed in the areas of several important wild life reserves like Manas National Park, Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Rajaji National Park, Dudhwa National Park, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Raimona National Park, to name a few.
• SSB’s officers and Jawans have brought glory to the country and have earned 01 Kirti Chakra, 04 Padmashree, 06 Shaurya Chakra, 02 Presidents Police Medals for Gallantry, 25 Police Medals for Gallantry, 83 Presidents Police Medals for Distinguished Service, 551 Police Medals for Meritorious Service, 24 Prime Minister’s Medals for Life Saving, 2 Asadharan Surkha Sewa Praman Patra (Posthumously), 14 Sarvottam Sewa Praman Patra, 23 Uttam Sewa Praman Patra, 1592 Utkrisht Seva Padak, 768 Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak, 6 Jivan Raksha Padak, 22 Prakram Padak, 01 Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and many other civil awards.

• The National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, Pune is a premier defence institution and a hallmark of global excellence in the sphere of military training. The idea of NDA as a training institution was conceived post the World War II to promote jointmanship and integrate the efforts of the future officers of the Army, Navy and the Air Force to deliver as a potent joint force in the face of the adversary.
• NDA Khadakwasla is one of the first institutions in the world to impart combined training to officer cadets of the three services. The concept and genesis of NDA dates back to the period before Independence when a committee of eminent persons was entrusted with the evolution of a scheme to implement the joint services training concept. The scheme took shape and after a great deal of search and discussion, the site of World War II Combined Warfare School in the vicinity of Khadakwasla Lake near Pune was selected for the new academy.
• In pursuance of this Scheme in 1946, the Indian Military Academy was initially renamed as the Armed Forces Academy and split into two wings, the “Inter Services Wing” and the “Military Wing”. The first batch of 190 cadets of the Army, Navy and Air Force commenced combined training on 16 January 1949 at Dehradun, in the Inter Services Wing (later renamed the “Joint Services Wing” or JSW).
• The foundation stone of the NDA was laid by the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 06 October 1949. NDA was formally inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Mumbai, Shri Morarji Desai, on 16 January 1955. The first passing out parade, held at Khadakwasla was reviewed by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 05 June 1955. The Joint Services Wing at Dehradun was subsequently relocated at Khadakwasla and came to be known as the “National Defence Academy”.
• The NDA continues in its march towards nation building, confident that in the years to come, it will draw the finest of India’s youth who will pass through the portals of this “Cradle of Leadership”, perpetuating through their gallantry, dedication and sacrifice, the Academy’s motto ‘‘Seva Parmo Dharma”.
• During the last seven decades, the Academy has established itself as an institution of rare distinction and rendered exemplary services to the nation. It has produced legends not only in the field of Military leadership but also in the field of science, technology, arts, literature and sports. The Academy is a unifying symbol of integration and jointmanship among the three wings of the Defence Services. The alumni of this unique nursery for character building and leadership have validated the objectives for which their Alma mater was established through their selfless service of loyalty, valour and heroism both in peace and in war – at home and abroad.
• Since its inception, it has trained more than 38,000 cadets, including over 1,000 cadets from 32 friendly foreign countries. It has given the country two Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) and several of its Service Chiefs. Three of its alumni have been honoured with Param Vir Chakra and 12 with the Ashok Chakra, the nation’s highest awards for gallantry in war and peace respectively. The other gallantry awards of the alumni include 32 Maha Vir Chakras, 45 Kirti Chakras, 163 Vir Chakras and 152 Shourya Chakras. The Academy is proud of its alumni who have made the supreme sacrifice for their motherland. The NDA has the distinction of producing 2 CDS & several Chiefs of the three services.
• The NDA will complete seventy-five years of eventful existence in January 2024 during which the 151^st Course will join the Academy. The year 2022 was etched in the golden letters in the history of NDA as for the first time female cadets joined 148^th NDA course paving the way for the other young girls in the country to follow their dream and become future military leaders. Their indomitable performance has put NDA on the global arena of military and political leadership.
• On 16 January 2024, NDA will be completing 75 glorious years in service to the nation. It remains committed to maintain the highest traditions and toughest standards of its training and rededicates its unflinching commitment to the nation on this momentous occasion.

• India and Vietnam share traditionally close and cordial bilateral relations. Mahatma Gandhi and President Ho Chi Minh, regarded as the Father of Nation in India and Vietnam respectively, led people in their heroic struggle against colonialism in their respective countries. India was the Chairman of the International Commission for Supervision and Control formed pursuant to the Geneva Accord of 1954 to facilitate the peace process in Vietnam. India established full diplomatic relations with unified Vietnam on 7 January 1972.
• Bilateral relations between the two countries have been elevated to the level of “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” during Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016. The current development of India–Vietnam relations are guided by a historic ‘Joint Vision for Peace Prosperity and People’ adopted by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc during the Virtual Summit held on 21 December 2020. On the sidelines of the Virtual Summit, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries also signed a Plan of Action for the period 2021-23 to implement the Joint Vision. In 2022-23, the two countries are celebrating the 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations that also coincides with the 75^th anniversary of India’s independence “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
• India has a long-standing development partnership with Vietnam that has made positive contributions towards capacity building, sustainable development goals (SDGs) and socioeconomic development under bilateral and ASEAN framework. Under the Mekong Ganga Cooperation Framework, India has been taking up Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) in various provinces of Vietnam for development of community infrastructure at grassroot levels. Vietnam is an active participant of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme and other scholarships.
• India and Vietnam share historical and civilizational links, including through their shared heritage of Buddhism and Cham traditions. The Government of India commissioned the Archaeological Survey of India for restoration and conservation of 3 Group of temples in My Son sanctuary of Vietnam. The restoration work has been completed following all specifications, quality and international standards and norms and in accordance to the MoU signed between India and Vietnam. Yoga is another link between the people of India and Vietnam and is very popular among the people of Vietnam. Thousands of Vietnamese people participate in the International Day of Yoga at multiple locations in Vietnam in June every year. Launching direct flights between the two countries in 2019 and implementation of a simplified visa regime travel have boosted travel for leisure, business and cultural purposes between the two countries.
• India & Vietnam has a lot of affinity in sports also. A martial art with a legacy of more than 3000 years, Kalaripayattu, the traditional martial art form of Kerala, India is regarded as the oldest and most scientific of all martial arts in the world. Kalaripayattu combines a wide range of combat techniques from empty hand combat to a wide range of weaponry including long staff, short stick, curved stick, sword and shield, spear, mace and flexible sword (urumi). A blend of yoga, meditation, relaxation and self-defense techniques, Kalaripayattu these days is gaining prominence and popularity.
• In Vietnam, (Vovinam Viet Vo Dao) was founded by Grand Master Nguyen Loc in 1936, with the desire to improve the self-defense and fighting ability of Vietnamese people in the fight to expel the French colonialists and to gain national independence. Vovinam combines the quintessence of traditional Vietnamese martial arts and the world’s martial arts, being famous for high-flying and neck-clamping blows. So far, Vovinam has been developed with more than 2 million students in many countries and territories around the world. In 2011, Vovinam was first included in the official competition program at the 26^th SEA Games held in Indonesia.
• A Joint Postage Stamp depicting Kalaripayattu and Vovinam is an opportunity to promote the national identity of India & Vietnam. This Joint Postage Stamp also celebrates the strong cultural, social & political links between these two national allies of the region.
