• Established on 19 June 1875 as one of India’s oldest and most prestigious private members’ clubs, Bombay Gymkhana has been a silent witness to the city’s transformation for a century and a half. What began as an exclusive institution has evolved into a vibrant hub of athletic and social activity while retaining its timeless heritage.
• With its rich tradition and history, Bombay Gymkhana stands as a distinguished sporting institution and has hosted numerous iconic events over the decades. Its lovely heritage building, centred around a gracious veranda, reflects classic architectural aesthetics, including high ceilings, Burma teak wood beams, wide veranda, and ornamental ironwork. Though modern amenities have been added over the years, the club has taken meticulous care to preserve its historical essence, ensuring that its old-world charm remains intact.

Its historic cricket ground remains a centrepiece, complemented by a versatile football ground used for football, rugby, major tournaments, and formerly the iconic Aga Khan Hockey Tournament—recognized as the world’s second-oldest hockey event. Racket sports flourish with three refurbished badminton courts that host state and national events; five squash courts that stage major tournaments and five synthetic tennis courts, now further enhanced by a newly added padel court. The club also features a swimming pool used for training, recreation, and galas; a world-class billiards and snooker room that hosts All India tournaments and selection trials; a dedicated bridge room for regular play and inter-club events; and a modern, fully equipped fitness centre. Polo has seen a remarkable revival with the return of the historic 1882 Bombay Polo Challenge Cup and the recent Arena Polo Championship; both held on the football ground. • The first cricket world cup tournament was hosted in England on June 7, 1975. There is a spice in the history of cricket world cup. In 1971 when rain ruined the fifth day of a test match between Australia & Newzeland in Melbourne, a sixty over match was held to decide the fortunes. And that was the very beginning of the era of Cricket World Cup. Four years after that first cricket world cup was held. Prudential Insurance was the sponsor of the First Cricket World Cup and the tournament was known as Prudential Cup. The Prudential Cup of 1975 and the second World Cup of 1979, both was won by West Indies. But the tables were turned by India in 1983 World Cup when they beat West Indies in the finals.
• In 1987 the Cricket World Cup venue shifted to sub-continent. And that was the beginning of the Australian domination in the cricket world. India lost to Australia in the finals in the world cup of 1987. As the venue of world cup changed in the 1987, so did the sponsors. Reliance Insurance became the new sponsors of the tournament. This world cup was co hosted by India and Pakistan. The 1992 world cup had its new champion and some new twists in the game of cricket. Pakistan took the cup and the world cup was co hosted by Australia and Newzeland. As per the vision of Kerry Packer, colourful jersey was introduced in the game of cricket. The cricket ball also changed its color from red to white and so did the side screen from white to black.
• Then came the world cup of 1996 where Srilanka won the world cup and the cup remained under the ages of Asia. But from 1999 to 2007 it was all about Australia when it came to the game of cricket. In 1999 the World Cup trophy gained a new name of ICC Cricket World Cup. And Australia set the world record of winning 3 world cups on the trout consecutively in 1999, 2003 and in 2007. In the world cup of 2011 a new country was added from Asia as the host of cricket world cup and it was Bangladesh. Bangladesh, India and Srilanka co hosted the 2011 world cup. Bangladesh cricket team first participated in 1999 world cup and beat Scotland and Pakistan that year. Bangladesh had shown a lot of promises in the world cup of 2011 but India was the champion of this tournament.
• ১৯৭৫ সালে ৭ জুন ইংল্যান্ডে সর্বপ্রথম ক্রিকেট বিশ্বকাপের আসর বসে। অবশ্য বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটের ইতিহাসটা একটু অন্য রকম। ১৯৭১ সালে মেলবোর্নে অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও নিউজিল্যান্ডের মধ্যকার টেস্ট ম্যাচের পঞ্চম দিনের খেলা বৃষ্টিতে ভেস্তে গেলে বিকল্প ভাবনার ফসল হিসেবে একটি ৬০ ওভারি ম্যাচের আয়োজন করা হয়। সেখান থেকেই ওয়ানডে ক্রিকেট প্রবর্তন। এর চার বছর পর শুরু হয় বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেট। সে বছর বিশ্বকাপের স্পন্সর প্রুডেনশিয়াল কাপ। প্রথম বছরের মত ১৯৭৯ সালের দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বকাপের শিরোপাও লাভ করে ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিস। ১৯৮৩ সালে তৃতীয় বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেট। এ বছর থেকে বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটের চ্যাম্পিয়নশীপ চলে আসে এশিয়াতে। ১৯৮৩ সালে তৃতীয় বিশ্বকাপের ভাগিদার হওয়ার সৌভাগ্য হয় ভারতের।
• ১৯৮৭ সালে ইউরোপের পর বিশ্বকাপের আয়োজক হয় উপমহাদেশ, সেখান থেকেই অস্ট্রেলিয়ার আধিপত্যের সূচনা হয়। অর্থাৎ এবার শিরোপা পায় অস্ট্রেলিয়া। এছাড়া স্বাগতিকের মতো বদলে যায় টুর্নামেন্টের আনুষ্ঠানিক নামও। প্রথম তিন আসরে নামানুসারে সেটি পরিচিত ছিল প্রুডেনশিয়াল কাপ নামে। ১৯৮৭ সালে স্পন্সর বদল হয় রিলায়েন্স এবং টুর্নামেন্টেরও নাম বদলে হয় রিলায়েন্স কাপ এবং যৌথ ভাবে দুই দেশ ভারত-পাকিস্তান আয়োজক হয়। ১৯৯২ সালের আসরের চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয় পাকিস্তান। এই আসর বসে অস্ট্রেলিয়া-নিউজিল্যান্ডে। এই বিশ্বকাপ ক্যারি প্যাকারের দেখানো পথে হেঁটে ক্রিকেটারদের গায়ে ওঠে রঙিন পোশাক। লাল বল রঙ বদলে হয় সাদা, সাদা সাইটস্ক্রিন কালো।
• ১৯৯৬ সালে বিশ্বকাপ ঘরে তুলে এশিয়ার দেশ শ্রীলঙ্কা। ১৯৯৯ সাল এবছর থেকেই ফের অস্ট্রেলিয়ার আধিপত্য শুরু। ২০০৩ সালেও জয় যাত্রা অব্যাহত রেখে টানা দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বকাপ শিরোপা ঘরে তুলে অস্ট্রেলিয়া। পরের বিশ্বকাপ অর্থাৎ ২০০৭ সালে চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয়ে শিরোপার হ্যাটট্রিক লাভ করে অস্ট্রেলিয়া। ২০১১ বিশ্বকাপ। ভারত, শ্রীলঙ্কার সাথে বাংলাদেশও আয়োজক হয়। এ বছর শিরোপা লাভ করে ভারত। বাংলাদেশের বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণ শুরু হয় ১৯৯৯ সাল থেকে। সে বছর স্কটল্যান্ড ও পাকিস্তান এই দুটি দেশকে হারানোর গৌরব লাভ করে বাংলাদেশ।

• Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar made his Test debut, on India‘s tour of Pakistan on 15^th November, 1989, when he was only 16 years and 205 days old. The teenager scored two fifties in his first series, against bowlers of the calibre of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus, Abdul Qadir and Imran Khan. He was only 17 years and 112 days old, when he saved India with an unbeaten 119, against England at Manchester, in 1990. The knock made him India‘s youngest centurion in Tests. India‘s tour of Australia in 1991-92, was the turning point of his career. In a series where every Indian batsman struggled, the 18 year-old Tendulkar smashed two hundreds – an unbeaten 148 at Sydney, and 114 at Perth. He occupied the ‘no. 4‘ slot in the batting order, for the first time, on that tour. The rest, as they say, is history.
  
• The bigger the occasion, the better Tendulkar played, throughout his career. Sir Donald Bradman paid him a memorable compliment, when he remarked that ‘Tendulkar reminded him of himself.’ In the new millennium, Tendulkar was the senior most component of a redoubtable batting order, which took India to many a famous win. In 2008, he eclipsed Brian Lara‘s tally of 11,953, to become the highest scorer in Test cricket. He holds the Test records for being the highest century-maker, and the most-capped player. In 2012, he completed a century of international centuries. He also has more than a hundred catches in Tests, to his credit, as well as some key wickets. Tendulkar‘s record in One-Day Internationals is second to none. He was the highest scorer in the 1996 and 2003 World Cups, and was an important member of the Indian team that won the title in 2011.
  
• A legendary cricketer and role model for millions, Tendulkar has played a critical role in India‘s ascent to the summit of cricket, in both Tests and ODIs, in the new millennium. The Government of India honoured him with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1998, and the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, in 2008. He took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house in India’s Parliament, in June 2012.

• One of the leading Cricket Associations in the country today, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was established in 1930 for promoting and popularizing the game of cricket in the State. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was also among the founder units of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and has played a significant role in shaping the objectives and activities of the Board over the last five decades.
• In course of its illustrious history, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has helped nurture promising young talent and build up many cricket players of repute, who have subsequently gone on to represent India. Among them mention must be made of C. Ramasamy, M.J. Gopalan, C.R. Rangachary, A.G. Kripal Singh, S. Venkataraghavan, V.V. Kumar, Bharath Reddy, Robin Singh, K. Srikkant, L. Sivaramakrishnan, W.V. Raman, S. Ramesh and Hemang K. Badani. As we know, Shri S. Venkataraghavan and Shri K. Srikkanth also had the honour of captaining the India Cricket Team. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association is also perhaps the only sports Association that has produced two double internationals for the country, namely Shri C. Ramasamy who represented the country in both cricket and tennis, and Shri M.J. Gopalan who donned the country’s colours in cricket and hockey.
• Since its inception, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has had the privilege of hosting 37 Tests and 10 One Day International Cricket Matches. The construction of the magnificent M.A. Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk also marks a landmark in its history. Its foundation stone was laid in 1971, and the stadium, which can accommodate 50,000 spectators, was completed in 1979. In the wake of the advent and tremendous popularity of one day cricket matches, and subsequently of day/night cricket, flood lights conforming to international standards were installed by the TNCA to make Chepauk an attractive venue for one day internationals. The first One Day International played under floodlights in Chepauk was between New Zealand and Australia in 1996. Further, in July 2005, the Executive Committee of the TNCA approved the establishment of a TNCA Cricket Academy. Apart from supplying free cricket balls to all the city and district teams, TNCA has also been helping the District Cricket Associations for laying of turf wickets and purchase of essential infrastructural equipments.
• The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has thus been rendering yeoman service in building cricket infrastructure in the State, as also in inducing and shaping young and talented cricketers, many of whom have been picked up to represent India in the international arena.

This set of four stamps issued by the Department of Post pays a tribute to cricket and to some of India’s legendary cricketers who gave the game its early impetus and set the trend which was to be followed by equally brilliant successors on the pitch.
  
• Vinoo Mankad (1917-1978); Mulvantrai Himmatrai Mankad widely known as ‘Vinoo‘ was one of India’s greatest all-rounders in cricket. He was a right-handed batsman varying his drive according to the state of the game. Watchful in defence, the late-cut (or dab), leg hit or cover drive earned him most of his runs; he was a high quality, left-arm orthodox slow bowler, with a slightly round-arm action who spun the ball unusually strongly and his flight and length were almost invariably perfect. His over would last a little more than a minute, allowing no rest to a batsman. He captained the Indian team in test cricket in the 1954-55 tour of Pakistan. He played 233 matches and 44 tests with a total of 11591 runs to his credit (average 24.70) and a highest score of 231; 782 wickets; 180 catches. He has the distinction of highest first wicket partnership with Pankaj Roy in Test Cricket (431 run partnership). He was chosen Wisden Cricketer in 1947. He was awarded life membership of MCC in 1967.

• Prof. D.B. Deodhar (1892-1993) was popularly known as the grand old man of Indian Cricket. He was the oldest first class cricketer at the time of his death and was last of the cricketers who made their first class debut before the first World War, in the year 1911-12. He was a solid right-handed middle-order batsman. He was Vice President of the BCCI and was also a national selector. He was President of the Maharashtra Cricket Association since its inception. Deodhar Trophy, a limited over inter-zonal competition played in India since 1973, is named after him. He played 81 matches with a run total of 4522 (average 39.32) and a highest score of 246; 11 wickets; 70 catches.

• Col. C.K. Nayudu (1895-1967) was India’s first captain in Test Cricket and the best all-rounder of the time. A right handed batsman, he was a hard-hitting foot player, driving on both sides of the wicket and also a more than useful slow-medium change bowler, with a controlled spin. With a game career from 1916 to 1964, he became the elder statesman of Indian Cricket, playing in a first class match in his sixty ninth year, going on to become a Test selector and Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He played 207 matches and 7 tests with a run total of 11,852 (average 33.94) and his highest score was 200, 411 wickets, 171 catches and 1 stumping. He was the first Indian cricketer to be honoured with ‘Padma Bhushan‘ by the Government of India in 1955 in recognition to his contribution to the development of sports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has instituted ‘Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy’ for cricketers under 22 years of age in 1974-75 as a tribute to him.

• Cricket – a game that has the heady magic of an addiction for sportsmen who have become legends in their lifetime and beyond. This set of four stamps issued by the Department of Post pays a tribute to cricket and to some of India’s legendary cricketers who gave the game its early impetus and set the trend which was to be followed by equally brilliant successors on the pitch.
• Vijay Merchant (1911-1987) was an outstanding Test batsman. His comparatively small physique did not handicap him, for what he lacked in reach was compensated by perfect footwork and quick reflexes. Right-handed, his cutting, both square and late, was brilliant, and he hooked, drove (especially the fast bowlers) and played the ball off his legs with mastery. He was a careful builder of an innings and there was something softly feline about him at the wicket. He played 150 matches and 10 Tests with 13,470 runs (average 71.64) and a highest score of 359 not out; 65 wickets; 115 catches.

• On March 25 1992, cheered by 87,000 cricket fans at the massive Melbourne Cricket Ground and watched by millions on television, even by people in the non-cricket playing countries, Imran Khan, Captain of the team, stepped forward and accepted the crystal trophy that was The World Cup from Sir Colin Cowdrey, Chairman of the International Cricket Conference in a glittering ceremony that ended in a display of breathtaking fireworks. It was the proudest moment in the history of Pakistan cricket, a cricket history itself remarkable for the meteoric rise of a nation that had been dubbed as “the Babes of Cricket” when Pakistan made its first official international debut in 1952-53 after it had been given test status.
• In 40 years, Pakistan had already become a major cricket force but the World Cup, the game’s most prestigious tournament had eluded it since its inception in 1975. Twice semi-finalists in 1983 and 1987 Pakistan had lost to the West Indies and Australia respectively to the bitter disappointment of its fans. 1992 was to be a different story. After a faltering start that nearly saw it eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the tournament, Pakistan picked itself up, got its act together and in a burst of inspired performances beat Australia and Sri Lanka at Perth, New Zealand, till then unbeaten, twice, at Christchurch and in the first semi-final at Auckland and then finally England at Melbourne in a memorable final. The prayers of an entire nation had been answered. Cricket is a team game and no individual can be given the entire credit. In winning the World Cup, every player made a valuable contribution. Indeed Pakistan’s success can be attributed to the collective efforts of the players who had welded themselves into a formidable combination.
• This was the fifth World Cup, the first 3 were played in England in 1975, 1979 and 1983. The fourth was co-hosted by Pakistan and India in 1987. This time, with Australia and New Zealand playing hosts, there were a number of innovations. The entire tournament was played with a white ball, the sight-screens were black and the players wore coloured clothing instead of the traditional white, some of the matches, including the finals were day/night, played under floodlights. South Africa which had been re-admitted to the International Cricket Conference was allowed to participate, making it nine teams instead of the customary eight. It was played on a single league basis with each team playing the others once in the preliminary matches. As in 1987, the matches were restricted to 50 overs and were supervised by “neutral” umpires. But problems for teams like Pakistan were compounded by the fact that apart from adjusting to the extra-bounce of Australian wickets, the weather was to play a crucial role. The World Cup was staged at the fag-end of the Australian and New Zealand summer and by the time the final came around, the tournament was well and truly into autumn, unseasonable cricket weather with a lot of rain about. Thus to the inherent uncertainty of the limited overs game was added another imponderable.
• Preparations for the World Cup started when Pakistan played at Sharjah in October, 1991 in a triangular tournament, the other teams being India and the West Indies. After a disastrous start when Pakistan lost to both the West Indies and India in the earlier rounds, Pakistan came back strongly to beat India in the final. The Sharjah tournament enabled the Pakistan selectors to take a close look at some of the new players, exposing them to high-pressure cricket at an International level. The Sharjah tournament was followed by a brief visit by the West Indies who played 3 one-day matches, winning two of them and one match, at Lahore, ending in a tie. Sri Lanka toured Pakistan, soon after playing 3 test matches and four one-day internationals. This was the final preparation at home for the World Cup. Pakistan then left for Australia to play some warm-up matches in order to acclimatise themselves to the conditions in that country. Pakistan hopes received a set-back when Javed Miandad could not accompany the team because of an injury he sustained while practicing. But he recovered in time to join the team just before the start of the World Cup. But Waqar Yunus, Pakistan’s main strike bowler had to return to Pakistan because of a back injury and this was a heavy blow. He was expected to spearhead the Pakistan bowling attack. There were to be other injuries during the tournament, the most notable being the shoulder-injury to Imran Khan resulting in him missing some key matches and Miandad who was stricken by a stomach ailment. Despite these handicaps and which would have disheartened most teams, the team never lost hope even though by the time it got to Perth, its position in the tournament was precarious, needing to win every match thereafter to make it to the final and keeping their fingers crossed that the weather would not intervene.
• The team on its return to Pakistan was rightly accorded tumultuous receptions and taken out in processions where thousands gathered to welcome them joyfully.
• Until the next World Cup in 1996, Pakistan will wear the mantle of world champions. It is a title they eminently deserve but it confers on them an additional responsibility of living up to the high expectations of its supporters.
• The World Cup has re-kindled interest in the game of cricket, not only in Pakistan where interest has always been great but in other cricket playing countries as well. This particular World Cup was seen live on television by millions who enjoyed not only the high standard of cricket but the spectacle of a tournament that resembled an on-going carnival.
• But most of all, winning the World Cup has seen an upsurge of national pride and people from all regions and all walks of life have shared the joy and savoured the triumph.
• Pakistan Post Office is issuing a set of commemorative stamps to honour the newly crowned and worthy world champions.

About : 

• Born on 11^th September, 1889, in one of the biggest land owning families of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Subbarayan was one of the few leaders of national stature from Salem District. His father, Paramsiva Gounder, having died in an accident, when he was only 8 years old, he was put under the care of the Court of Wards. Young Subbarayan inculcated patriotic feelings through Mr. Camben Morrison, his school teacher. Later, he studied in Hindu High School and Presidency College of Madras. It was while he was in college that he met Radhabai, a Mangalorean from Brahmo Society, who he married according to Brahmo rites with the blessings of Rajaji. Rajaji‘s philosophy and political thinking guided Dr. Subbarayan throughout his life.
• Dr. Subbarayan qualifies as a barrister and obtained a Doctorate in Law from Dublin.
• In 1921 he became a Council Secretary to the Minister for Development in Tamil Nadu. He served as MLC from Tiruchengode for 15 years from 1922 to 1936. He joined the Congress movement in 1933. Dr. Subbarayan‘s initial intimacy with the Justice Party enabled him to be the Premier of the Madras Presidency from 1926 to 1931.
• Dr. Subbarayan was an admirer of British liberal political thought and also a staunch follower of Gandhiji and Rajaji. He served as Education and Law Minister in Madras Presidency and was a Minister in Rajaji‘s cabinet in 1937. He was imprisoned alongwith his wife in 1940 for participating in the Congress movement. Later, from 1947 to 1949, he was a Minister and the leader of the House in O.P. Ramaswami Reddiar‘s Ministry. He was Home Minister and Minister for Police in the same Ministry. In these capacities he introduced reforms including the Zamindari Abolition Act.
  
• He was a member of the Constituent Assembly. In 1949 he was sent as Ambassador to Indonesia. On his return in 1954, he became a Rajya Sabha Member and was elected as a Member of the Privileges Committee. In 1957, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tiruchengode constituency and in 1959 he became the Union Minister for Communications and Transport in Pandit Nehru‘s Cabinet. As a Union Minister he had taken many progressive steps.
  
• He won the 1962 election from Tiruchengode again. He was appointed as Governor of Maharashtra in 1962, but he served in this capacity only for a few months, as he died in 1962.
  
• He had interests in many fields in life. He was a keen cricket player and he played even for the M.C.C. of England. He was the founder President of the Cricket Control Board.
