• The music of Akshya Kumar Mohanty combined the nativeness of Odisha in all its forms – folk, classical and emerging. He was the most sought after music Director of Odia Film Industry who is widely known for his romantic songs. He was also a singer of repute and a lyricist. He experimented with themes and his creation started a new cult of ballads in Odia, such as “Kanchi Abhijana”, “Randipua Ananta” and “Konark Gatha”.
• Born on 12.10.1937, Akshya Kumar Mohanty has written more than 4000 songs, sung over 8000 songs and composed music in 106 feature films. His literary work also includes 100 short stories, 12 novels and an autobiography. His writings were crisp, direct and bold. He was a master storyteller in Odia language. He is also known for his peppy youthful songs like “Jaare Bhasi Bhasi Ja”. His literary work also reflects the sensitivity and depth of an artist to do justice to the complex feelings and emotions. His immortal songs and compositions remain the most heard and revered Odia songs among the younger generation also. He passed away on 17.11.2002.

• Dr. Bhupen Hazarika (8 September 1926 – 5 November 2011) was a poet, music composer, singer, actor, journalist, author and film-maker of high repute born in Assam. Bhupen Hazarika began his career in films as a child actor in the second talkie film to be made in the pioneering years of 1939, Indramalati. After completing his education and leaving his job as a teacher, he went to Kolkata where he established himself as a successful music director and singer. During that period, he made several award winning Assamese films such as Shakuntala, Pratidhwani, etc. and composed evergreen music for many Assamese films. He was also considered as a trend setter in Bengali music. As a singer, he was known for his baritone voice and diction; as a lyricist, he was known for poetic compositions and parables which touched on themes ranging from romance to social and political commentary; and as a composer, for his use of folk music. Ek Pal (1986), Rudaali (1993) and Daman: A Victim of Martial Violence (2001) are some major hindi films to his credit. Bhupen Hazarika also composed music for films from Bangladesh which got international acclaim. He was awarded the Padamshree in 1977 for his outstanding contribution to the field of culture in India.

• Hemant Kumar (16 June 1920 – 26 September 1989) was a singer, composer, and producer in the Hindi and Bengali film industry. Even though he is most known for his hindi film songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s, he also sang in Bengali, and other Indian languages. He is known to have recorded approximately 2000 songs during his career. Hemant Kumar’s first film song was in the Bengali film Nimai Sanyas released in 1941 and his first compositions for himself were the Bengali non-film songs “Katha Kayonako Shudhu Shono” and “Amar Biraha Akashe Priya” in 1944. His first Hindi film songs were in Irada in 1944. He is considered a foremost exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. In the hindi film industry he is known for his work in the films Bees Saal Baad (1962), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Anupama (1966).

• Music has always been an important aspect of Indian life. Classical Music, which is based on ragas, has been the mainstay of the life of the people in the country. Its various forms have been used in movies, music albums, folk songs, etc.
  
• Indian Classical Music is of two types – Hindustani and Carnatic music. Hindustani music is mainly found in North India. Khayal and Dhrupad are its two main forms. There is a significant amount of Persian influence in Hindustani music in terms of the instruments, style of presentation and ragas. There is also a rich tradition of Gharanas in classical Hindustani Music. Carnatic music, found mainly in South India, tends to be rhythmically intensive and structured when compared with Hindustani Music.
  
• Ali Akbar Khan, also known as Khansahib or Ustad, was a Hindustani classical musician of Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Born on 14^th April, 1922 in Comilla, Bangladesh, he was instrumental in popularizing Indian classical music in the West, both as a performer and a teacher. He set up a music school in Calcutta in 1956, and the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967 in California, USA, with a branch in Basel, Switzerland. He was also a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Music in the University of California. Ali Akbar Khan received the Padma Vibhushan in 1989. He passed away on 18^th June, 2009 in California, USA.

• Ravi Shankar, the sitar maestro, was born in Varanasi on 7^th April, 1920. He spent his youth touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother, Uday Shankar. Thus he was exposed to both Indian and Western dance and music. He gave up dancing in 1938 to learn sitar. After completion of his studies in 1944, he worked as a composer for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi from 1949 to 1956. In 1956, he began his tour of Europe and America and popularized Indian classical music through teaching, performances and by associating with the violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, and Beatles guitarist, George Harrison. Ravi Shankar served as a nominated Member of Rajya Sabha from 1986-1992. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1999. This exponent of sitar continued to perform till his death on 11^th December, 2012.

• Early signs of women’s aspirations for gender equality in Eretz Israel were apparent as far back as the First Aliyah, as some women chose to take part in public affairs or non-conventional professions. Although the pages of history have not granted them their proper place – they operated in a world of preconceptions and discrimination against women, their fight for self-realization and equal opportunity cleared a path and inspired others.
• The State of Israel embraced equality as a core principle early on, and just three years after the establishment of the State the Knesset passed the Women’s Equal Right Law of 1951, guaranteeing equal treatment of women and men.
• Women have yet to be fully included in society’s most influential bodies, but the efforts of these pioneering women set a quiet social revolution in motion, furthering gender equality and changing our society.
• Sara Levi–Tanai
  (1910-2005)Choreographer, songwriter and poet Sara Levi-Tanai was born in Jerusalem to parents who were originally from Yemen. After her mother passed away when she was seven years old, she grew up in an orphanage in Sated and in the Meir Shfeya youth village. Levi-Tanai’s many talents, including writing and dramatizing were apparent from the time she was a child and she was awarded a JDC scholarship to Levinsky Seminar in Tel Aviv. There she was trained as a preschool teacher and subsequently worked in preschools in little Tel Aviv. Due to a shortage of proper educational material, she began writing poems and recitations for children. She also published stories in a number of newspapers, Davar, Davar Yeladim and Davar Hapo’elet.

  In 1940 she moved to Kibbutz Ramat Hakovesh, where she taught preschool during the day and was a cultural creator at night. She wrote revues for the holidays, set biblical passages to music, wrote holiday songs and created folk dances, the most well-known of which is El Ginat Ha’egoz (To the Nut Grove). She also published two children’s books at that time. Her desire to be more active in the arts brought Levi-Tanai back to Tel Aviv, where she founded the lnbal Dance Theater in 1949. She brought young girls and boys from “Kerem Hatemanim“, and through them connected to her Yemenite roots, which inspired her unique artistic works.

  Sara Levi-Tanai developed a new language of movement. Her choreography was inspired by the bible, Israeli landscapes and Yemenite and Sephardic folklore. Through its many overseas tours, lnbal served as an ambassador of Israeli culture.

  Sara Levi-Tanai was awarded the Israel Prize in dance in 1973 for her contributions in the field of performing arts, as well as various other awards, including the title of “honored citizen of Tel Aviv“.

• Esther Raab
  1894-1981Esther Raab, Israel’s first native poet, was born in Petach Tikva, the first Hebrew moshava (agricultural colony). Her father, Judah Raab, was among the founders of Petach Tikva. Her poems began to be published in the early 1920’s and her first book, Kimshonim (Thistles) came out in 1930.

  The happiest years of her life were those spent growing up in the moshava, with its landscapes, animals and vegetation, and in time – her wealth, friends, home in Tel Aviv, which was a gathering place for writers and artists in the early 1930’s, and most of all – her poems, written over the course of more than 60 years, until just before her death at age 87.

  The low points in her life were marked by her disappointing loves and marriage, her years of silence, her childlessness and in her later years she lost her fortune and was haunted by nightmares.

  Author Yehoshua Kenaz wrote of her poetry: “Reading these poems is an Israeli experience, a Mediterranean experience, a first class artistic experience that poet Esther Raab was perhaps the first to express in such a bold and pure manner.“

• Jagjit Singh was born on 8 February, 1941 in Sri Ganganagar (Rajasthan). Shri Jagjit Singh was known for his unique style of singing and composing music, which brought out the deepest and innermost feelings in listener’s hearts.
• Jagjit Singh was instrumental in reviving the popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composed them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. Hailing from humble background, Jagjit Singh took Indian music to new heights during his noteworthy career. Having received extensive training in Hindustani Classical music under the tutelage of Pt. Chaggan Lal Sharma initially and Ustad Jamal Khan later on, Shri Jagjit Singh developed his own distinctive style of singing and composing music that incorporated elements of both Indian Classical and western music without compromising either one of them.
• Jagjit Singh‘s work was much appreciated in films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). He is considered the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning five decades and a repertoire comprising over 80 albums, the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining.
• Jagjit Singh was awarded ‘Padma Bhushan‘ in 2003 for his remarkable contribution to Indian Music.
• He breathed his last on 10^th October 2011.
