About :

  • Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. At the age of 14, he began his mission to promote human values of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love, and non-violence, while stressing the unity of all religions. His life of service and compassion inspired the establishment of numerous institutions devoted to education, healthcare, and rural development, benefiting millions, around the world.
  • The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust (SSSCT) continues his vision by offering free healthcare, education, and social welfare services without discrimination. Recognised by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with a Special Consultative Status, the Trust operates two super-speciality hospitals, two general hospitals, and two mobile hospitals that treat around 3,000 outpatients daily, completely free of charge. These hospitals are highlighted by NITI Aayog as exemplary not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare models devoted to “service to society as service to God”.
  • In education, the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning provides free undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, combining academic excellence with character building. More than 5,000 students study in all these institutions and receive quality education free of cost. About 102 Sri Sathya Sai Schools, with about 60,000 children under the aegis of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation (SSSSO), are being provided with financial assistance to improve their infrastructure, like buildings, furniture, and computer facilities, to enable quality education to reach the grassroots.
  • Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s vision of rural upliftment led to major drinking water projects supplying safe water to over 1,600 villages and three million people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. The Trust’s Sai Mitra Solar Energy Project generates 6.1 megawatts of clean energy. It also provides disaster relief, builds houses for affected families, and feeds nearly one lakh people daily.
  • Besides, to instil human values in youth, the “Bal Vikas” programme educates over 4,00,000 children through 20,000 voluntary teachers.

Born on 2 Aug, 1920 at Basant, Pali district, Rajasthan, India

Died on

About :

  • Purshottamdas H. Purohit was a karmayogi, an unsung freedom fighter, a visionary entrepreneur, and a devoted philanthropist. He was a man who lived a life devoted to hard work and selfless service to all sections of society.
  • He was born on August 2, 1920, into a Rajpurohit (Brahmin) family in Basant, Pali, Rajasthan. He lost his father at the age of three and was raised by his mother. Due to limited resources for farming, he moved to Mumbai at the tender age of ten in search of a livelihood. Through dedication and hard work, he eventually earned recognition as a noted chef.
  • His exceptional culinary skills were acknowledged when he was chosen to accompany his employers as head chef on a business tour to Europe in 1939. This tour, originally brief, was extended to four years due to the outbreak of World War II. His travels through countries such as Italy, England, France, Austria and Germany broadened his worldview, though he remained deeply connected to his roots.
  • During his time in Europe, he met his hero, Bharat Ratna Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and became affiliated with the Azad Hind movement. His growing involvement led him to become a trusted confidant of Netaji. He played a discreet yet vital role in the movement, seeing it as his duty to the Nation. The story of India’s freedom is built on the silent sacrifices of heroes like him.
  • After independence, he started a modest lodging and boarding venture in Mumbai, which he developed into the renowned Adarsh Group of Hotels. This included Adarsh Lodge, Adarsh Hotel, Adarsh Palace, Adarsh Mahal and Adarsh Baug. As a visionary entrepreneur, he created employment opportunities in both Mumbai and Rajasthan, promoting economic growth and improving lives. His commitment to service and excellence earned him loyal clients from diverse communities.
  • He channelled his energy and resources towards the upliftment of society, particularly the underprivileged. Whether responding to natural disasters such as floods and droughts or offering support during periods of social unrest, he consistently extended help. He also collaborated actively with Government bodies, including the Municipal Corporation, Police, and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
  • Greatly inspired by the ideologies of Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bharat Ratna Lal Bahadur Shastri, he celebrated ‘Shastri Jayanti’ each year at Adarsh Hotel. Recognising his commitment to social welfare, the Government of Maharashtra appointed him Justice of the Peace and Special Executive Magistrate.
  • Although he could not pursue formal education, he was a strong advocate of educating the younger generation. To advance this cause, he contributed towards building a hostel in Falna, Rajasthan, offering a safe and encouraging environment for students. He also provided financial assistance to many aspiring learners.
  • In 1989, he founded the P. H. Purohit (Rawat Singh) Charitable Trust. Today, the trust continues to operate following his values.

About :

  • Uttarakhand is among the few Indian states that boast two Raj Bhawans, with the first in the state capital, Dehradun and the second one located in the picturesque hill station of Nainital. This historic edifice, originally known as the “Government House,” was constructed during the British colonial era when Nainital served as the summer capital of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). Designed in the Victorian Gothic style, reminiscent of a Scottish castle, the foundation stone was laid on April 27, 1897, and the construction was completed in 1899.
  • The Raj Bhawan was designed by architect F.W. Stevens and executive engineer F.O.W. Ortel. Spanning over 200 acres, the two-story mansion comprises 113 rooms. The construction utilized local stones with Ashlar finishing and incorporated Burma teak along with other varieties of teak wood. The building’s design showcases European patterns and Gothic architecture, featuring intricate woodwork, arched windows, and steeply pitched roofs.
  • Throughout its history, the Raj Bhawan has hosted several notable figures. In the pre-independence era, it served as the residence for British Governors of the United Provinces, including Sir Antony MacDonnell, Sir James, Sir John Misten, and Sir Harcourt Butler. Post-independence, Smt. Sarojini Naidu, the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh, was the first Indian occupant of this historic monument.
  • Adjacent to the Raj Bhawan lies approximately 160 acres of forested land, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna . The estate’s lush greenery and serene environment make it a haven for nature enthusiasts and contribute to its tranquil ambiance.
  • One of the estate’s prominent features is its vintage golf course, spread over 45 acres. Established in 1936, it is one of India’s oldest golf courses and is affiliated with the Indian Golf Union.
  • The Raj Bhawan is open to visitors, offering guided tours of select areas. Tourists can also enjoy a game of golf by paying a nominal green fee. The estate’s sprawling lawns, bonsai garden, and rich floral species add to its allure, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

About :

  • Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh is a historic, magnificent building situated in the heart of Lucknow and is the official residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. This grand building, surrounded by lush green gardens and beautiful landscapes was built in 1798 by French architect Claude Martin. Initially it was called “Kothi Hayat Baksh (Abode of gift of life)”. It was the residence of the British Governors of the United Provinces and later served as the residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh after India’s Independence in 1947.
  • Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh is a double storey building with high varandas, lofty ceilings and abundant greenery. Main building has large airy porticos, meeting halls and housing facilities for guests. Gandhi Sabhagaar has beautiful flower decoration on side walls and ceiling with golden color traditional paintings. It also houses selective collection of sculptures and monuments of great legends in Kala kaksh.
  • Raj Bhavan is a unique building having Indo-European architecture that reflects the rich cultural heritage and the grand history of Uttar Pradesh. The construction of the building is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the architects and artisans who built it. It is also known for its iconic features such as its grand walls adorned with beautiful carvings and integrated designs. It has a sprawling campus of 52 acres that adds to its beauty and charm. Colorful gardens, cool fountains, beautiful trees, panchtantra (fitness area of children) and chirping birds also enhance its beauty.
  • Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh has silently witnessed around 225 years of history of Awadh. This great building faced many ups and downs and played a very significant role in the Indian freedom struggle by providing a platform for political dialogue and protest and by serving as a symbol of British colonial power that was challenged by the Indian people’s quest. Many important political and administrative decisions have been taken in this building over the years.

About :

  • The Parliament House building, originally designed as a Council House by the colonial government, was commissioned in 1927 and is almost 100 years old and a Heritage Grade-I building. It is widely believed that the Chausath Yogini Temple in Morena, Madhya Pradesh inspired the building design. While the building is a grand architectural monument which highlighted architectonic elements from Indian tradition such as chhajjas, chhatris, jharokhas, jaalis, gumbads, the architects Lutyens and Baker could not completely forgo the European classism that the entire structure was meant to stand monument to. This shone through not only in how the Chambers were intentionally made to differ in size and interior based on the occupants but also in the teak wood panelling of the Assembly Chamber highlighting the four British Dominions through enamelled and gilded coats of arms embedded into it. The Hall, intended for state occasions and joint sessions, was meant to be a symbol of the Indian Empire’s integral unity, built to possibly house a Durbar from all across the subcontinent.
  • The New Building in Parliament Complex is the first purpose-designed Parliament of India. It is designed to address the issues of space, infrastructure and safety standards that are currently faced by the present Parliament building. In doing so, it symbolizes the modernization of India’s governance infrastructure and the coalescence of our diverse people into a nation.
  • Located adjacent to the present building, the new building has larger Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha halls. Modern technology and building systems for the efficient functioning of an expanded Parliament are integrated. While the design is modern in its construction techniques and building materials, it respects the architectural character of the local context.
  • The new building is designed to address the present and future needs of efficient Parliamentary functioning. The present parliament building was designed as a Council House and later converted to serve as the Parliament house after independence. The requirements of our bicameral legislature being different from the council house, have led to many ad-hoc extensions and technological addition. These extensions and additions have affected the present Parliament building’s structural integrity. The new building will relieve the present Parliament building of the functional stress it has faced from ad-hoc upgrades and allow for its proper refurbishment and retrofitting.
  • The new building will have a seating capacity of 672 in the Lok Sabha and 384 in the Rajya Sabha. Further, the four public galleries each for both houses will help the public to watch the debates of Parliamentarians and the proceedings of Parliament. Other functional spaces such as the meeting rooms, lounge areas and the dining halls also fall short of present needs. Makeshift arrangements thus, have to be made, and are not very comfortable or dignified. Larger bespoke spaces for these functions are now accommodated in the new building’s design.
  • Located on a triangular plot adjacent to the Sansad Bhavan, the New Building in a built-up area of 65,000 sq m is designed to make efficient use of land. It houses the Lok Sabha Chamber, the Rajya Sabha Chamber, a Courtyard, library, office areas, dining areas and the Constitution Hall and Gallery – a publicly accessible space.
  • The new building looks to the future. Building systems are designed to function in an integrated manner with latest technology to support parliamentary procedures and optimise the consumption of energy. This green building is a symbol of India’s commitment towards environmental sustainability. The new building’s design achieves the highest safety standards in the context of earthquake proofing.
  • The central Lounge complements the Open Courtyard and serves as a place for Members of Parliament to interact. The building will also have state of the art committee rooms equipped with the latest audio-visual systems. The Constitution Hall will house the original copy the Constitution of India and it symbolically and physically puts the Indian citizens at the heart of the Parliament Complex. It is also designed as Divyang friendly to enable the people with disabilities to move around freely and independently. Further, the building will have offices that are designed to be secure, efficient, and are equipped with the latest communications technology. This purpose designed facilities will help deliver superior experience for the Members of Parliament.
  • The design takes inspiration from our heritage. The exterior design continues the materiality and colour scheme of the present Parliament building. Details reflecting India’s construction legacies have been incorporated in the architecture and nationally recognised symbols have been used as motifs in the interior design of the building.
  • Each element of the new building is thoughtfully designed and crafted to mirror the rich cultural heritage of India. While the interiors of the Lok Sabha are based on the peacock theme, our national bird, the Rajya Sabha is based on Lotus theme, the national flower. The open-sky courtyard of 700 Sq m in the New Building in Parliament Complex has a banyan tree, a symbol of knowledge and longevity, and the national tree of India. The three galleries leading to the Constitution Hall are adorned with artefacts to represent the rich cultural vibrancy and the heritage of Indian civilization. The murals and panels of the building also manifest the country’s centuries’ old democratic traditions. Specially designed and hand-woven carpets, stone carved bands, furniture details, jail designs, ceiling patterns – each feature is inspired from and made in different parts of the country embodies the spirit of the unity in diversity of India. The architectural styles from across India are seamlessly interwoven with the elements of modernity to mirror the scientific tradition of the country. The placement, shape and size of the new building preserves the formal order and symmetry of its context.
  • The two buildings, along with the Parliament Library, and Annexe will work together as an integrated Legislative Enclave. This will facilitate smooth and efficient functioning of operations of the Parliament. The New Building in Parliament Complex manifests the aspiration of 21st century India and will stand as an epitome of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’.

About :

  • The Gauhati High Court as of today emerged from the High Court of Assam. On 9th September 1947, the Assam Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution that a High Court be established for the Province of Assam. On 1st March, 1948, the Governor General of India promulgated the Assam High Court Order, 1948, under the provisions of the Government of India Act, 1935, establishing the High Court of Assam with effect from 5th April, 1948, at Shillong (the then capital of Assam, now in present day Meghalaya). Sir R.F. Lodge was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Assam High Court on 5th April, 1948.
  • The High Court of Assam shifted to the Old Commissioner’s Building at Gauhati on 14th August, 1948. It was subsequently shifted to a dome structured building (now the Old Block of the Gauhati High Court) on 20th February, 1957, and then to its present location (now the New Block of the Gauhati High Court) adjacent to the mighty Brahmaputra river on 16th December, 2013.
  • With the creation of the State of Nagaland on 1st December, 1963, the High Court of Assam came to be known as the High Court of Assam and Nagaland. On the reorganization of the North-Eastern region by the North Eastern Area (Reorganization) Act, 1971, a common High Court, called the Gauhati High Court, was established for the five North-Eastern States of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura and the two Union Territories of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. The Gauhati High Court became the common High Court for the 7 (seven) States of North Eastern India after the Union Territories of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh attained statehood.
  • With the establishment of separate High Courts for the States of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on 23rd March, 2013, the Gauhati High Court now has jurisdiction over the States of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, with its Principal Seat at Guwahati and 3 (three) permanent Benches in Kohima (Nagaland), Aizawl (Mizoram) and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh).
  • The Gauhati High Court has played a seminal role in the separation of the judiciary from the executive in the States of Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. The neighbouring States of Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh with its colourful and diverse customary laws and practices are unique in itself. Handed down from generations, the customary laws and practices recognize the Village Council consisting of the elders of a tribe as the supreme decision-making body of the village. Special provisions in relation to customary laws and practices conferred upon the States of Nagaland and Mizoram under Article 371A and Article 371G respectively of the Constitution of India have been staunchly protected by the Gauhati High Court in various landmark decisions.
  • The Gauhati High Court administers justice in an area having enormous variations, geographically as well as ethnically. Divergent laws govern the people of the region. The indigenous inhabitants of the hill areas are primarily adapted to the conciliatory process rather than the adversarial system. Some of the customary practices for settlement of disputes prevalent in this area are not only expeditious and lasting, but far more efficacious than the system followed in the rest of the country. The laws applicable to different areas may vary, but the entire area is administered by a common High Court. Notable legal luminaries, including Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (former President of India); Keshab Chandra Gogoi (former Chief Minister of Assam); Dinesh Goswami (former Union Minister); Justice Ranjan Gogoi (former Chief Justice of India) and many others have graced the corridors of the Gauhati High Court and contributed to its development. These celebrated legal luminaries and countless others are the toast of the legal fraternity and this institution pays its homage to these great personalities.

About :

  • The history of S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack dates back to the Maratha rule when a first-aid centre was started at the current location to treat sick pilgrims enroute to Puri & back during the famous Car Festival (Ratha Yatra) of Lord Jagannath.
  • In 1875, the Odisha Medical School was born under the tutelage of the British which subsequently became the Odisha Medical College in 1944. It was renamed as Sri Rama Chandra Bhanja Medical College in 1951 to honour the Maharaja of the then princely state of Mayurbhanj for his handsome financial contribution of Rupees One lakh and thirty thousand, a huge amount during those times. The first batch of 22 MBBS students joined in 1944 and passed in 1948, and MCI recognised the course in 1952 with retrospective effect. Post graduate courses, MD/MS was started in 1960 and post-doctoral training in Cardiology and Neurosurgery from 1981. Since then many disciplines have started post-doctoral courses. Very few medical colleges in the country can boast of this long tradition and history.
  • The institute stands tall among the medical colleges of the country as an outstanding example of excellence in training and patient care. Nearly 2000 trained man-power emerge from the institute annually and thousands have spanned out to different corners of the country and the world over 10 decades of its existence. It has been recognised by the then MCI as an ideal institution facilitating education and training in under-graduate, post-graduate and super-speciality subjects. Many doctors from this institution are luminaries in their respective fields. S.C.B. is a saga of brilliance in multiple fields and growing by leaps and bounds.
  • It has a sprawling campus of 87 acres which accommodates the medical college and hospital, the dental college, the nursing college, pharmacy wing, and the DMLT wing. It has a large academic complex that includes state-of-the-art lecture theatres, library, and auditorium besides multiple hostels for the students.
  • The services provided to the patients at no cost are unbelievable. It has a bed capacity of 2200, and the mega expansion plan in the offing will increase it to a staggering 5000 beds. The new complex is expected to be completed by early part of 2024 with a budget provision of 3500 crores. It is being constructed under the supervision of the government of Odisha and it will be state-of-the-art in all domains that few medical colleges in the world can boast having a world class health care facility.
  • There are some outstanding stand-alone services and Departments that very few medical colleges in the country can match. The Telemedicine Resource Centre in unique. It has started in 2001 with the help of ISRO and SGPGL, Lucknow. It has been catering to the needs of thousands of patients across the state, training doctors in the peripheral service and providing on-line classes to the students during the pandemic.
  • Research has been a growing priority of the institute. Many departments are involved in collaborative research with other national centres. There are multiple extra-mural projects supported by national funding agencies like ICMR, DBT and DST. Excellent research facilities like the MRU (Multi-disciplinary research unit) and VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory), funded by the central government, have been facilitating quality research.
  • The Alumni Association of the Institute boasts of an outstanding galaxy of celebrity alumni who are luminaries in many disciplines across the world. Many have received accolades like Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Dr B C Roy award and Samanta Chandra Sekhar award for their outstanding contribution in the field of medical science. They provide inspiration to generations of students who graduate from this institution.
  • The COVID pandemic was a challenge that the institution accepted. The institution has created 4 dedicated, 600 bedded COVID Units, within the premises, with dedicated facilities for dialysis, OT for surgery, Paediatric unit and an Obstetrics and Gynaecology wing for pregnant mothers and 140 ICU beds. Over 10,000 patients have been treated since its inception.
  • The recent installation of 9 ECMO units by the government at S.C.B. Medical College has been a historic step. It is the largest ECMO facility in Eastern India and perhaps in the country in a Govt. hospital. Care is provided to the patients free of cost. Critical COVID-19 patients needing ECMO support, who were being air-lifted to other centres in the country, have availed this facility in this institute.
  • S.C.B. Medical College is not just a heritage institution that has blended with modernity. It is a sacred place for thousands of students who wish to excel, and millions of patients – mostly poor, under-privileged, and the needy, who cannot afford the high cost of modern medicine. It is indeed an institution that every citizen of the country should be proud of.
