Now on the occasion of the XI^th Asian Games, the Department of Posts is issuing a set of four special stamps depicting Athletics, Cycling, Archery and Kabaddi, the last sport has been included for the first time in Asian Games.

• Asian Games, with motto “Ever Onward” are the sports festival for three billion Asians for ensuring cooperation and fraternity in sports. Conducted under the banner of Asian Games Foundation, the games are held every four years to bring youth of this continent together with the message “Friendship, Fraternity for Ever”.
• India had the proud privilege of lighting the first Asian Games torch in 1951 when 489 athletes from Afghanistan, Burma, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand competed in Athletics, Aquatics, Basketball and weight lifting in the eight day extravaganza held in March 1951. The honour of hosting the Asian Games was once again given to India when the 9^th Asian Games were held in New Delhi in November 1982 under the aegis of the then founded Olympic Council of Asian Games which has now become the permanent organisation to ensure continuous development of the Asian Games. While about 500 athletes from 11 countries had competed in six disciplines during the first Asian Games the number rose to 4595 athletes from 33 countries in 21 sports events in the 9^th Asian Games at New Delhi. The Asian Games Movement has indeed come a long way during the last four decades and the 11^th Asian Games are now being held in The Peoples Republic of China.
• India’s participation in the Asian Games since its inception has provided a vital support to the olympic movement. India may not have won the greatest number of medals but its participation in the true Olympic spirit has been a matter of appreciation.
• A 400 plus contingent from India participated in the 10^th Asian Games held at Seoul where a commendable performance was put up. In the present Asian Games India is participating in 17 sports disciplines. Vigorous preparations for these games have been made by Indian team members during the last two years and National Camps have been held at various regional centres of the Sports Authority of India. The field in the Beijing Asian Games is decidedly tougher than the previous games. Despite the increased challenge, Indian teams are determined to do well and hope to come back with a distinguished performance.

• The X Asian Games are being held in Seoul, the Phoenix City of the Orient. Seoul is the 7^th city to host the games and will welcome 5,000 athletes and visitors from 36 nations. It is perhaps the first time that the same city will host the 1988 Summer Olympics (September 17-October 2) and the 1986 Asian Games (September 20 to October 5).
• According to the present plan for the competitions, there will be 254 Gold Medals at stake in 25 different sports. The games of the X Asiad are scheduled to run from Saturday, September 20, 1986 through to Sunday, October 5.
• The number of different sports included in the Asian games has increased gradually from six in the first series in New Delhi (1951) to 21 in the IX Asian Games held at New Delhi (1982). This number grew to 25 sports representing 269 events at the 1986 Asian Games. The new additions are Bowling, Judo, Fencing and Taekwondo.
• India is participating in the following events: 1. Cycling, 2. Golf, 3. Tennis, 4. Volleyball, 5. Weightlifting, 6. Badminton, 7. Shooting, 8. Hockey (Women), 9. Boxing, 10. Hockey (Men), 11. Table Tennis, 12. Gymnastics (Men & Women), 13. Yachting, 14. Rowing, 15. Archery, 16. Swimming, 17. Equestrian, 18. Athletics, 19. Football, 20. Wrestling, 21. Judo, 22. Taekwondo.
• The emblem of the X Asiad was adopted in September, 1982 and symbolises the ongoing progress for the people of Asia as expressed in the Asian Games motto ‘Ever onward‘. This emblem is derived from the Yiu-Yang symbol called Taeguk in Korea and is widely used as a decorative motif in the traditional art and architecture. The lively three lobed figure also includes the sun of the Olympic Council of the Asia Emblem. The X Asiad emblem is the joint work of Abu Jong–Un, a Professor of design at Sukurjung Women’s University, Ku–Dong Jo, Design Professor of Dongduk Women’s University and Kim Hyun, the President of the Design Park Studio.
• Asian Games commemorative coins and medals have already been put on public sale in Korea and Overseas. During the Asian Games, Seoul Asian Games Organising Committee (SAGOC) is planning a series of cultural events. The whole gamut of Korean art forms, both traditional and modern, will be represented in these events and world renowned artists have been invited to perform.
• Young people from all over Asia and the World will come to Korea to compete with each other shoulder to shoulder in the Olympic spirit of peace and brotherhood. And ‘the Land of the Morning Calm’ is all set to welcome them in the traditional Korean style.

• It is difficult to pin point the origin of the game of Hockey. Some authors say that its place of birth is Greece, while others say, it started in Asia. This game was brought to the sub-Continent in 1896 by the British Forces. It soon spread out and became very popular. Field Hockey, for the first time, won recognition in 1908 when it was included in the IV Olympics Games held at London. It was in 1928 that Hockey team from this sub-Continent entered in the Olympics held at Amsterdam, Holland. The team gave an excellent performance and won the Gold Medal.
• As an independent state in August 1947, Pakistan‘s Hockey talent, though abundant, was disorganised. Pakistan was placed fourth in the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Games. In the 1956 Olympic Games at Melbourne, Pakistan reached the final for the first time but lost to India by a solitary goal.
• Pakistan finally got the much-needed and well-deserved morale-booster at the Asian Games at Tokyo in 1958 when it won the Gold Medal relegating India to second place on a better goal average. And the crowning achievement came in 1960 when Pakistan won its first Olympic Gold at Rome.
• Pakistan has an enviable record in this game. In the Asian Games since 1958, Pakistan has won six times and lost only once. Out of the 5 World Cup Tournaments, Pakistan lifted the Trophy 3 times and was once placed second. In the Olympic Games, so far, Pakistan has won 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze Medals. In the 6 Champions Trophy Tournaments, held so far, Pakistan has annexed the Trophy twice and was placed second on two occasions.
• GRAND SLAM
  • Munich was avenged at Los Angeles in 1984. The Pakistan Hockey Team, to the great delight of millions of Hockey fans in Pakistan, regained the Olympic Crown after sixteen years. With this victory, Pakistan achieved the rare distinction of winning the Grand Slam as they have captured three major titles i.e. the Asian Games, The World Cup and now the Olympic Crown.
• LOS ANGELES OLYMPICS-1984
  • Pakistan had to fight every inch of the way to the semi-final with fortunes fluctuating with every match. Australia and Holland came to the Tournament as “hot favourites”. They claimed a long list of achievements against the World Cup holders.
  • Pakistan team demonstrated the touch of class which enabled them to beat the formidable Australians in the semi-final. The final between Pakistan and West Germany can be termed as a clash between Asian artistry and European technique. It was a treat to watch our side play with West Germany. From the first whistle of the match to the last each one of its moves was an execution of dazzling stick-work and artistic wizardry. Never before did victory look so good and justifiable as it did at Los Angeles.
  • The victory of Los Angeles should give a great fillip to the game in Pakistan where public interest in Hockey was beginning to ebb prior to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles.
• ASIAN CUP
  • Pakistan retained the Asia Cup Hockey title at Dhaka during January 1985, by defeating a hard-fighting Indian team in extra-time after playing a 1-1 tie in regulation time. Now the immediate target for Pakistan Hockey team is the next Champions Trophy to be held later this year and the World Cup which will be played in England subsequently.
  • Over the years it has become increasingly clear that competition among the hockey-playing nations in the world is becoming tougher than before, and still greater efforts would be required to maintain our position at the top.

• Having returned to the city of its birth, Asiad has also reached out to enliven the Pink City of Jaipur and the bustling metropolis of Bombay.
• Rowing, which was one of the four new events added to the IX Asiad, is being hosted at Ramgarh lake about 30 km from the historic Pink City. The Rowing Regatta comprises of Coxed Fours, Coxed Pairs, Coxswainless Pairs and Single Sculls. The tranquil waters of the lake have been the scene of excitement ever since the commencement of the event on 21^st November. The concluding competitions today promise a thrilling finale.
• As the rowing boats are racing to the finish line at Ramgarh, an array of multi-coloured sporting yachts are afloat off the shores of Bombay. Their splendorous sails billowing in cool November winds, the yachts are gracefully gliding over the gentle waves towards the finish line near the harbour. Yachting event of the IX Asiad commenced on 20^th November in Bombay, India’s premier gateway to the west. The competitions are in the international classes of Fire Ball, Enterprise, OK Dinghy and Wind Glider (Surf Board). A series of seven races are being held from 21^st to 27^th November, one race a day. Good Winds and Fair sailing to them.

• Whatever is most noble, heroic and admirable in man is brought to perfection in sports. Sports contribute to the blossoming of the spirit of human endeavour which constantly seeks higher and higher levels of achievement. The ancient Greeks who instituted the Olympics realised the potentialities of organised sports apart from the virtues of individual callisthenics. The Olympics year was also a year of peace and goodwill during which the warring Greek city states declared a general truce.
• The Asiad is a symbol of Asian unity.  It will lead to the growth of fraternity and friendship among peoples and nations while strengthening and cementing old ones. The Asiad was instituted despite numerous obstacles and after many earlier attempts to organise such games in Asia had failed. Born under the patronage of Jawaharlal Nehru, the apostle of peace and brotherhood, the Asian Games have since led to the renaissance of sports in this Continent. In the First Asiad held in 1951, eleven countries participated with small contingents. The IX Asiad will have three times that number of participating countries. More than 5000 men and women will take part in the 21 events which include four new ones namely, equestrian, handball, golf and rowing.
• Delhi, which has been in the grip of gruelling preparations, has now been decked to perfection with a number of new patterns and designs waved into her fabric. One looks with wonder and admiration at the numerous fly-overs which have gracefully taken their positions as if they have been planted overnight. The many new hotels suddenly peering into the sky and the well laid out Asiad Village are welcome signs especially to friends from abroad. Apart from the renovated sports venues, the newly built Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with synthetic tracks and the Indraprastha Indoor Stadium with its silvery dome are exquisite creations in the service of sports.
• The world is turning its gaze to Delhi to witness the magnificent IX Asiad starting today with pageantry, colour and jubilation. Appu, the mascot of the games, with characteristics playfulness and friendliness, extends a royal welcome to all the participants in this festival of sports.

Design : The stamp depicts a painting on a wrestling bout. The scene is laid against a golden ground with flowering trees and plants. The Persian influence is predominant on the style of the painting. The work is executed in the Mughal style of the early 17^th century and is probably a copy of the Persian original. This painting, done by Janaki, is available in the National Museum, New Delhi.

• The IX Asiad was expected to be a fantastic event. The construction of new sports facilities and the modernisation of the existing ones enriched India’s capital architecturally. There was a chance to display country’s cultural attainments and the headway it has made in the field of physical education and sports.
• Wrestling is a sport loved by our countrymen since time immemorial. It is one sport, which did not require expensive equipment, arena or other facilities. Today, wrestling is a much world­wide acclaimed sport. It requires proper wrestling ring, referees, judges and half a dozen rules and regulations to the extent that the wrestlers should be evenly matched weight-wise. There are two styles found in the free styles wrestling:-
  • 1. The Indian style – in which one opponent has to put the other flat on his back.
  • 2. The Greco Roman style – in this the winning wrestler has to keep the loser on his back to the count of 10 before he is declared the winner.
• Wrestling was held at the Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi.

• The city of Delhi has been the vertex of social and political life of the sub-continent. Through centuries it has been fought for and defended, and often razed and pillaged. It was even deserted more than once, only to rise again like the mythical phoenix. The seat of power of many in monarch and dynasty, Delhi bears the mark of a very extraordinary history. Some speak of the seven cities of Delhi built by successive conquerors, each adding his share to the pageant. The ravages of time have laid low many a splendorous monument; yet history stands writ on the ruins that still brave the batterings of nature. The first city of Delhi, Lal Kot was raised by the Tomar Rajput King Anangpal in 11^th century. The legendary hero Prithviraj Chauhan enlarged and fortified the rugged citadel with massive ramparts and renamed it Quila Raj Pithora. The soaring tower Qutab Minar built by the Slave King, Qutb–ud–din Aibak and his successor Iltutmish, still stands sentinel to the imperial battlements erected there. The other cities were built at Siri, Tughlakabad, Jahanpanah, Kotla Feroz Shah, Purana Quila and Shahjahanabad. The last of the conquerors, influenced by the living past of Delhi, raised with greatest care the new Capital, New Delhi. The density of Delhi appears to lie in being built, rebuilt and constantly built upon. The process continues today, but for a different cause. Having hosted the First Asian Games in 1951, Delhi is now getting ready for the IX Asian Games in 1982.
• The First Asian Games were held in the National Stadium which was built beyond the solemn India Gate facing the regal Rashtrapati Bhavan that crowns the Raisina Hill. The stadium is now being renovated and will be the venue of Men’s Hockey matches. The main athletic stadium is being built near the tombs of the Lodi Emperors who ruled in the 15^th century. It will have a capacity of 75,000. Apart from various athletic events, this stadium will be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies. A two-tier structure, 23 metre high, it will have an 8-lane synthetic track. The space enclosed by the tracks will be used for soccer. There will be an office area built into the stadium below the upper tier. A spacious Press Centre, equipped with world-wide telecommunications facilities, will also be located in the stadium. A computerised communication system will provide information within seconds about the events taking place in all centres. The stadium will be flood lit to suit colour TV coverage. A giant electronic score board will display the results of various events in Hindi and English simultaneously.
• An indoor stadium, being built near the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on the banks of the Yamuna, will be the venue of Badminton, Gymnastics and Volleyball. It will have a seating capacity of 25,000. The bowl like superstructure is supported by eight RCC pylons rising to a height of 44 metres. The arena can be divided into two with the help of a sound-proof collapsible partition so that two events can be held simultaneously. By the side of this stadium a Cycling Velodrome is being built according to international specifications. It will have a minimum slope of 7° rising to a maximum of 38°. The width of the track will be 7 metres and length 333.33 metres.
• Adjacent to the lush grounds of Rashtrapati Bhavan, a swimming complex is being constructed. It will have three separate pools for warming up, for the main events and for diving. A Tennis Stadium with a capacity of 1,400 and two more courts will be added to the already existing Tennis Complex having nine courts. A number of other stadia in Delhi will be used for various games. All these are being renovated and modernised. A new hall is being built in Pragati Maidan Exhibition Complex for Table Tennis and Boxing. A new shooting range of international specifications is being built at Tughlakabad, where the third city of Delhi was built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlak in 1321 A.D.
• Siri was the second city of Delhi raised by Allauddin Khilji (1296-1316). Amidst the remains of its former glory, the Asian Games Village Complex is being built to provide comfortable accommodation as well as facilities for recreation and practice for 5,000 competitors and officials who accompany them. Each of its dwelling units will have an open terrace and a private garden. The Community Hall, with a capacity of 2000, will be the venue of Weight Lifting. A special feature of the village will be the kitchen-cum-dining complex which can cater to 2000 persons at a time.
