• Parbati Ghose a.k.a. Chapala and Chandana was a legend in the Odia Film Industry. She was born in Cuttack, Odisha in 1942. She came from a family rich in culture and education. She got indulged with dancing lessons from great exponents like Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Dayal Sharma and Guru Suresh Routray. From a very young age she participated in a lot of social causes and State celebrations like Rabindra Jayanti. She got involved in All India Radio and participated in the social and cultural programmes of the Praja Socialist Party.
• The huge success of the movie “Sri Jagannath” was defining moment of her long and memorable career. In 1953, she was offered the lead role in “Amari Gaan Jhua” opposite Gour Ghose. In 1956, she played a leading role in “Bhai Bhai” a sensitive story of division of caste and wealth. She also acted in National award winning movies “Laxmi” in 1962, “Kaa” in 1965 and “Stree” in 1968. Later, she kept her passion alive through acting in TV serials and Radio plays and soon conferred the top most status in both. She also made short films like “Sankalp”, “Surakhya” and “Amari Gaan” for Family Welfare Department, Government of Odisha. She breathed her last on 12.02.2018, leaving behind her imprint and legacy in the Odia Film Industry.

• C. Kesavan was born at Mayyanad in Quilon. He graduated from University College, Trivandrum and took his law degree from Law College, Trivandrum. He was a prominent freedom fighter who organised, guided and led the struggle for the independence of India and was the chief architect of the liberation of Travancore State from the clutches of monarchy.
• After obtaining BA and BL degrees, he started legal practice at Kollam. He imbibed the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru, the great sage and social revolutionary and was gradually attracted to the dynamic philosophy of Gandhiji. As a man of the masses, he admired the radical economic and political teachings of Karl Marx also. Serving as the general secretary of the social organisation Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, he gave a new momentum to the social and political struggles in the state.
• C. Kesavan briefly worked as a school teacher. His political career began in 1932 as the undisputed leader of Abstention Movement (Nivarthana Agitation). As a leader of this Movement, which later shaped the struggle for Independence in this part of the country, he entered mainstream politics through the State Congress. He invited the severe wrath of the rulers while serving as the general secretary of All Travancore Joint Political Congress. He was arrested at Alleppey on June 6, 1935, tried for sedition, sentenced to imprisonment and fined and confined to Central Prison, Thiruvananthapuram. He made an epoch-making speech in Kozhenchery in 1935 which was a turning point in his career and a milestone in shaping the destiny of modern Kerala. C. Kesavan was arrested and imprisoned in Central Jail, Poojappura, Trivandrum. Later released, he was given a rousing reception at Kidangaparambu, Alappuzha. With the establishment of Travancore State Congress in 1938, the stormy political life of C. Kesavan had begun. Later, he courted arrest frequently and became a regular visitor to Poojappura Central Prison in Trivandrum. He had to again undergo imprisonment from August 29, 1942 for one year for taking part in the Quit India Movement.
• In the first election held after Independence he was elected to the Travancore Legislative Assembly and became a Minister in the Pattom Thanu Pillai Ministry in 1948 and held the portfolio of Health & Forest. By opening the Medical College in Trivandrum and legislating the bill for minimum wages of labourers, C. Kesavan displayed a model to Kerala society. However, he resigned after a few months. Subsequently, he was again elected to the Assembly and became the Chief Minister of Travancore State on February 28, 1951. Afterwards, even though he was elected to the Assembly once again in 1952, he retired from active public life after a few years and spent the last phase of his life at his home town Mayyanad in Quilon till his death on July 7, 1969.
• C. Kesavan was also a pioneering journalist; he launched one of the first daily newspapers in Malayalam: Kaumudi. He was a singer, actor and writer who penned one of the classic autobiographies in literary history: Jeevitha Samaram (Life Struggles).
• A Kerala icon, former Chief Minister of erstwhile Travancore-Cochin, leader of freedom movement, founding father of Travancore State Congress, architect of modern Kerala, hero of Abstention Movement; C. Kesavan was an outstanding social reformer of avowed commitment who revolutionized the society of Kerala with his trademark honesty, humility and inexorable determination. Known for fierce independence of thought, outlook and action, C. Kesavan’s brilliant and coercive oratory moved millions in their pursuit for political independence and social regeneration.

• Literature is one of the major contributory factors in the nation building. It acts a cultural binding force and works as an evocative medium to boost up the moral of the people in the times of crises. Literature is the vehicle through which people’s culture is transmitted. Department of Posts is bringing stamps on five such authors who have contributed significantly in this arena.
  • Another author on which the stamp is being brought out is Bhisham Sahni. Bhisham Sahni was one of the most prolific writers of Hindi literature. He was born on 8 August 1915 in Rawalpindi. His immense popularity was a reward for his literary merits – his sharp wit, his gentle irony, his all-pervasive humour, his penetrating insight into character, his mastery as raconteur, and his profound grasp of the yearnings of the human heart. With his high-spirits and passion for life of the common people, he travelled through villages and towns of Punjab with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) theatre group in 1948; then began to teach to earn a living; and then lived in the USSR for seven years as a Hindi translator. This sprawling reservoir of experience collected in the hustle-bustle of various occupations ultimately filtered down into his stories and novels. The ‘simplicity’ of his work comes from hard layers of experience.
  • He is known as a progressive writer, influenced by Marxism, and yet he does not seem to be engrossed with political themes. He explores the human condition with kindness and understanding.
  • Bhisham Sahni’s last published book, was an autobiography with the title Aaj Ke Ateet (The Pasts of the Present). He was associated with several literary and cultural organizations. He was General Secretary of the All India Progressive Writers Association (1975-85) and Acting General Secretary of the Afro-Asian Writers Association and was also associated with the editing of their journal Lotus.
  • He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for literature in 1998 for his contribution in Literature. He passed away on 11 July 2003.

• Dr. M. G. Ramachandran who was affectionately known as “Puratchi Talaivar” (Revolutionary Leader) was born on 17.01.1917 to M. Gopala Krishna Menon and Sathyabama in Kandy, Sri Lanka. After debuting films in 1940, he had an extremely successful stint of more than 35 years in the Tamil film industry. He was introduced to Perarignar Anna in the year 1952 and was closely associated with him thereafter. The latter had a deep influence on MGR, who in turn considered Annadurai as his mentor. It was his association with Annadurai that let MGR to venture into politics. He became a part of Annadurai’s DMK, a Dravidian political party. He was elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly from Parangimali Constituency in the year 1967. Dr. M. G. Ramachandran started the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) Party in the year 1972 and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the year 1977. He was the first popular Indian actor to serve as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms never having lost an election, till he breathed his last on 24.12.1987.
• Dr. M. G. Ramachandran was one of the most illustrious, charismatic and popular Chief Ministers of the State of Tamil Nadu. He is remembered nationally and internationally for having launched several innovative welfare programmes which have become model schemes implemented throughout the country. His policies were directed for social welfare and economic growth. He came up with several educational reforms, upgraded the free meal scheme, banned liquor and preserved the state’s cultural heritage thus attracting tourism. The “Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Nutritious Meal Programme” implemented in all schools in Tamil Nadu has been commended by the Hon’ble Supreme Court and it was ordered to be replicated across the country. Dr. M. G. Ramachandran laid the foundation for the rapid socio-economic growth that the State of Tamil Nadu has witnessed in the last three decades. He established a number of Universities in the State including the Tamil University, Mother Theresa Women’s University and the Bharathidasan University. He hosted the fifth World Tamil Conference.
• The Government of India honoured Dr. M. G. Ramachandran with the highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna for his unparalleled public service.
• Dr. M. G. Ramachandran continues to be an inspirational figure who is always remembered for his qualities of magnanimity, generosity, commanding leadership and determination to fight for the legitimate rights of people. Dr. M. G. Ramachandran’s life story continues to inspire millions to strive for the greater public good through dedicated service.

His robust and full-throated singing perfectly suited two mega stars of South Indian Cinema – M.G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan, who had their roots in Tamil theatre.
