About :

  • As the 3rd in the Nature Conservation Series “Birds”, a 20 yen stamp bearing a drawing of Apalopteron familiare hahasima has been issued.
  • Apalopteron familiare hahasima belongs to Meliphagidae of the order of sparrow. It is as big as a sparrow and has green color on its back and yellow on its ventral side. It feeds on insects and honey. It has inverse triangle patterns of dark color around its eyes. Hence it is called “meguro” (black eyes). The bird lives only on Ogasawara islands. When the islands were returned to Japanese rule, about 5,000 such birds were estimated to live on the isles. Since the number is said to be declining as the development of the islands makes progress. Apalopteron familiare hahasima is designated as natural monument.
